Re: Our "Neck of the woods!!!"

It took me a while to find a picture and then to resize it . Here is kind of an unusual shot of people harvesting Irish Moss with horses. I guess these are the kind of things that one can find if you know where to look. This is the original way it was done and still done today. The location is the shores of the canadian wind test site at the northern tip of PEI, where the 2 tides meet. This area is full of seals and lobsters!!

To get to this area it is about 1.5 hrs the fast highway. By the coast takes .5 day, again depending how many times you stop. Because you might drive by stompin toms old school house museum and want a few pictures.

Re: Our "Neck of the woods!!!"

So, is the horse dragging some kind of rake that harvests the seaweed? And what is this Irish Moss used for?

Re: Our "Neck of the woods!!!"

yes there is a horse , it walks out chest deep in the water dragging a rake and scoop bringing the moss in to shore. In the old days it was forked unto carts and taken home to dry. Believe it or not it is used in ice cream (Caragenan) a thickening agent. The John Deere now loads it unto trucks. After a storm there is usually lots of it near shore.
I enjoy watching these type of activities, a good combination of old and new.

Okay! For some reason the full size image gets cropped right around the guy in the ball cap looking right. I can see it in the thumbnail now but the browser is doing weird things to the full size image!

Thanks for the clarification.

Hi: All... Seaweed extract is also used in anti-wrinkle creams like Oil of Olay. Taken internally as a capsule it could be the famed, lost fountain of youth!!! Alf

Great photos! Here's one looking out our back window. UFOs over Mt. Rainier. We put on our tin foil caps while watching this; hoping for some communication, but nothing happened (that we know of, anyway!).

To think we towed our 17B up Mt. Rainier as far as you can go May 2010. Awesome photo.

Re: Our "Neck of the woods!!!"

Not quite as impressive as Mt. Rainier (we also drove up as far as possible on Christmas, 1969).

Oswego's Lighthouse. Sits at the mouth of the Oswego River where it enters Lake Ontario.

Great shot. But, now you have to explain just what I'm looking at.

Was it being shelled?

Re: Our "Neck of the woods!!!"

No shooting - just a little wave on the lake!

This is what it looks like when there are BIG waves:

Re: Our "Neck of the woods!!!"

I caught myself just before I commented on how high the tide was in that shot.

But that got me wondering how much the water level varies in the Great Lakes.

Ron:

Here is a link with some information about Great Lakes Tides:

http://www.great-lakes.net/teach/cha...100_tides.html

Says tides are 1 to 4 cm. I would guess that is hardly noticeable.

Re: Our "Neck of the woods!!!"

No tides to speak of, but some serious waves. It is not unusual to have 35' - 40' waves during storms. The Coast Guard keeps 2 of their 47' "Roll Over" MLB boats here in Oswego. Here they are in action:

Re: Our "Neck of the woods!!!"

I have been to the great lakes many time.
Summer and winter.
It is hard to believe that lakes can be that BIG.
Beatuiful place to camp.
A couple of years ago we drove around Lake Superior.
Oh Canada :-)
