Heavens, I would think that would be required, paying off debt without income would sure be tough. I was told too I need a nest egg to play with, thus the reason I am still slaving away.
And yeah, I have been, and will continue to help my kids out when I can, but when I retire, I am only going to be primarily concerned with using our money for us.

Hope you don't have any daughters. Mine just got engaged and the Old Bag is out tonight looking at potential wedding venue.
A photographer quoted $3,800 for 8 hours shooting ( prints, DVDs etc. extra ).
I'd shoot it myself, but I refused to do weddings all my career.

The question I struggle with (and which has serious implications as to when that retirement date will be) is how big that nest egg needs to be for my circumstances and plans.

Amen to that Jim. If my last dime is spent as I take my last breath, that'll be proof of good math.

Hi Folks,
Regarding gas mileage, left the "Wet" Coast on June 1st... across Canada to the Bay of Fundy, then west through ME, NH, VT & NY... through Niagara Falls... "Toranna"... Sarnia & posting this from Benton Harbour, MI (beautiful spot)...
We have crossed the Rockies, the Canadian Shield, the Laurentians, the Appalachians, the Adirondacks, the Niagara Escarpment & finally to somewhat flat land... to here in MI.
Pulling the 5.0 TA with the Titan... average mileage at 20.2 l/100km or for our American cousins (& Alf... :-}...), who unlike the rest of the world cannot learn metric, 11.6 mpg US. Now on the flats... 12.3 mpg... Again, for Canadians like Alf, that's about 14 - 15 mpg (based on the Imp. Gal.).
I have spoken with a ton of very experienced RVers (Canadian & American) and looking all in the "eyes", all have said one can expect, based on their own mileage, the same as ours. 16, 18 & higher mpg is, in all due respect... "a crock"...
But then again, what do I know?
Travel Safe,
Larry

I think it depends on your trailer and your tow. I have two friends, each with a Casita 17 footer, who routinely get 18+ mpg while towing, using a Ford F150 Eco-boost, and a Chevy Silverado, respectively.

I have a 3.0 diesel ram 1500 4x4 and a 19. Last outing we got about 19 mpgs towing on highway and some two lane hilly stuff. I've averaged 22 mpgs in mixed since I bought the truck. Best I've got is around 28 going the speed limit on the highway. Pretty pleased so far.

One thing though Larry, and I've heard this from a lot of people: the smaller/mid size trucks often get worse gas mileage when towing than their full size counterparts. I guess that makes sense because the smaller truck has to work harder to tow on the same terrain and at the same speed, which can dramatically reduce mpg.

Awesome combo! Any difference in the two rigs towing? (since you have had both units). What is the cargo capacity of your tow vehicle? I have a 5.ota on order and will be getting a new tug soon.
Happy travels

Don, I'd seriously look at the Ram diesel, as Will confirmed my other source of 18 mpg towing is something gas engines will not allow. That is 50% better than my current 12 mpg number so on my last trek to Osoyoos instead of burning $2k in gas it would have been 1/3 less or about $1350. Plus it gets 24+ not towing with a 600 mile range.

Just a note on mileage: Hand calculate, or at least, compare the "lie-o'meter" in the vehicle to a hand calculated number. My overhead reads 4 mpg higher than actual.
