recently joined- few questions

My wife and I are interested in a 5.0 or a 19 ft Escape. We live in Virginia, USA and recently visited Dan who lives about an hour from us. He was nice enough to show us his beautiful 5.0 and answer our numerous questions. We have sent 3-4 emails to the Escape company but have not heard from anyone. I am wondering if there is some sort of email glitch going on. Does anyone have any recommendations about emailing. We maybe interested in purchasing in May, 2010 and want to make sure we can start the ball rolling in plenty of time.
Thanks
Ambrose

Re: recently joined- few questions

Welcome Ambrose. You will be well pleased with your decision. I would try to give Tammy or Reace a call, I have heard of others whose emails were no received. I am not real sure of the production times on those units, but you are right to get the ball in motion on it right away.

Hi: HokieEscape... Ambrose isn't the only one with email probs. My ISP decided to change my contacts list and I can't access it with my antique windows program anymore. Alf

Re: recently joined- few questions

Yes, indeed we are 'infected' with the Escape virus and it only got worse after seeing Dan's 5.0. I figured the email problem was something to do with computers and not the folks at Escape. We will look at our email program and if all else fails, try an old fashion method and use the phone. Dan- thanks for relaying the message.
In the meantime has anyone had any experience with installing a 5th wheel hitch on a 2006 Tacoma? It has the composite truck bed so the hitch would need some custom work to attach it to the frame. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Re: recently joined- few questions

Hi: Ambrose...And Welcome. We don't have a composit box pickup but I have broached the subject with my RV Tech. and he tells me there are special yolks to fit under the box and around the axle. The rest of the 5th. wh. hitch in the box is standard equip. We have a Husky 16K slider. Alf

Welcome to the forum. If you don't have international calling , Costco has cards at a fairly reasonable price.

Re: recently joined- few questions

Thanks everyone for your replies. Was able to talk with Tammy via email at my work. We are currently thinking about 5.0 versus 19ft. Seems 5.0 has more living space but you loose your storage in the pick up bed. Any thoughts?

Re: recently joined- few questions

Ambrose, if I was willing to use a pickup with an extended cab instead of an SUV, I would have likely gone with th5.0, mainly for how the bed lays out. We decided on the SUV because it suits the rest of our lifestyle better (and my company does have pickups if I need one for the odd use), thus went with the 19. While there is a ton of space under the bed of the 19, I find we don't use it all, though who knows what the future will bring.

Either way, you will get a nice trailer.

Re: recently joined- few questions

Hi: Ambrose... IMHO what you gain with the 19'er is a strip of floor about 6" wide and a little more storage space.
We have a Delta diamond plate lock box that fits behind the cab and is under the tonneau cover.
The ease of hook up and the positive tow+ the bed layout and largest bathroom sold us on the 5.0.
Storage space is not an issue which ever trailer you chose. Our problem is we need more STUFF!!!Alf
escape artist N.S. of Lake Erie p.s. at the toll booths the 5.0 is only+ 1 axle not 2 for the extra chg.

Re: recently joined- few questions

Hi Ambrose.
We have a Tacoma as a tow vehicle so we could go with a 19 or a 5.0. I agree with comments about the direction of the bed in the 5.0 as I think it is preferable to the 19 (although I haven't yet seen a 5.0 and have wondered about headroom in the "bedroom area"). We did opt for the 19 (hatching next April). We will carry 2 kayaks on the roof of the truck, golf clubs and carts in the truck box and bikes in or on the trailer. So it was our lifestyle that dictated the decision. I have been to the plant several times now and am very impressed at the quality of the construction. You can't go wrong with either decision.

Re: recently joined- few questions

Mike M. mentioned head room on the 5.0. I am 6'1". Anyone know how much distance there is between the mattress and the ceiling? I would like to be able to sit up at times while in the main bed. Maintaining the wheel bearings/brakes certainly would be easier on the 5.0.

Re: recently joined- few questions

Hi: Ambrose... I'm only 5'8" so no problems sitting up in bed...tho I would rather lay down. Can't comment too much as we have a 8" thick memory foam queen size matt. not the standard 5" one from Escape. Alf

Re: recently joined- few questions

A nice 5th wheel tacoma plastic bed setup is here. Under supports were welded to the frame to support the plastic bed.

you can enter the front of the main page here. scroll three fourts down for his other Tacoma Mods. Suspension mods too I think.

Re: recently joined- few questions

The hitch installed on the Tacoma is for goose necks though. Scamp is not a real 5th wheel, unlike Escape and Casita. I bet installation of 5th wheel hitches can be done similarly to the goose neck shown here.

I am totally excited, as I got a class III hitch receiver and everything installed today on my 4Runner, hurray! My car is ready, now the 17'B needs to be build... One step closer... It is a Escape Flu that got me....
