insurance specifically for the trailer ?
recently in a conversation with DMV about tags and process to get them for a trailer, they said insurance is not required for trailers in Texas just auto insurance/liability....although it's a good idea to insure the trailer against loss or damage.

I think you have to show proof of insurance on the tow vehicle to get the tag for the trailer - but I could be wrong... I always have it with me, but I honestly can't remember if they made me show it the last time I was there. It makes sense, really. If you need it to license the tow vehicle, that should be good enough.

I could be wrong too. I produced the insurance for the trailer when I registered it - not the truck insurance. Perhaps the truck insurance would have worked too.

But, for a new Escape, no way I'd go without the trailer insurance, even if I could. Maybe an old trailer, provided the truck insurance covered it.

Your automobile policy covers liability for the trailer being towed, in the event of an accident and the trailer hit another vehicle. For comprehensive you would need a separate policy to cover the trailer value for theft or damage while being towed or sitting, not mandatory but protects your cash investment.. If you have a loan on the trailer the financial institution would require an insurance policy that protects their collateral.

Maybe your auto policy covers the trailer in such a situation, or maybe it doesn't. It would depend on your state / province / insurance company. Best talk to an agent and read the policy.
I pay for my trailer plate tag each year and I have comprehensive, collision and liability for the tow and trailer as separate policies.

Yes, agreed, each municipality is different.

I also have 'uninsured motorist' coverage for if somebody causes me injury/damage and doesn't have insurance or have enough insurance. Really a good idea if you plan to head south from B.C. Here, you would be fined and lose your license for driving without insurance.
