Absolutely stunning views of Jupiter, Mars and Saturn tonight. Can't beat those dark west Texas skies for stargazing.

Good thing DW Sooz doesn't read the forum much. I'd never get her to that campground...
(unless you were there, Robert. Sooz says Yolanda is one of the nicest people she's met anywhere on the planet).

We met a retired Ranger manning the Ranger museum in Yellowstone who had done a lot of firefighting. He joked that he and his fellow firefighter many times thought of shooting Smokey (once they figured out that all the fire suppression they had been doing for decades eventually led to cataclysmic fires.)

That is one of the reasons for the severity of the Fort McMurray fire. The forest was old and full of dead wood due to suppression of past fires.
I like how BC parks for a bunch of years have just let fires burn themselves out, just so long as people and settlements are not affected. Hiking in country a few years after a burn provides lots of lush growth, often filled with berries.

I would personally love to see one of these fellas up close like this. Lisa would be with Yolanda searching for high ground.

Jim, they were doing that in Yellowstone last time we were there too. Pretty large fire closed off one of the roads, but they were just monitoring it to make sure it wasn't going to endanger any of the major buildings, or people. It is fascinating to walk thru old burn areas and see how fast they start growing again.
Robert, apologies for drifting your thread....

San Antonio to Canada - Part Deaux
Made it early to Chisos Basin Campground in Big Bend NP today. There were several sites still open, so I guess our plan of showing up on Monday morning worked well. We even have 2 bars of Extended 3G wireless signal here. That's a real surprise, considering the coverage map showed a black hole.
For those of my fellow Escape owners who are considering this campground, there's a sign that says trailers over 20 feet are not recommended on the road coming in.
Don't worry - you can make it. Just go about 5 mph around some of the tighter hairpin turns.
The issue won't be your trailer size, but the campsite size. We fit, and there are several sites which could accommodate a 21, but most were all taken by tiny tents when we arrived. Tenters don't save the big sites for RVs, and the National Park Service doesn't seem to care about reserving certain sites for tents and others for RVs.
Bottom line, as long as the park is not full and you have a few sites to choose from, Chisos Basin can accommodate your Escape.

What?! I got no coverage at Chisos Basin last year; the only cell signal I got in the park was a weak one at Panther Junction. I'm really impressed since Chisos Basin is essentially a bowl surrounded by mountains. Who is your carrier?
Regarding that hairpin turn on the mountain road-- I had no problems negotiating it while pulling my 21, but on the way down I encountered a 40-foot bus filled with tourists coming up the mountain. Fortunately I saw them in time to stop and give the bus driver room to maneuver the bus around that turn. So watch out for those buses on that road.

Good point about the buses Mike. Have to watch out for any larger vehicle coming the other way.
We have Verizon. The phone right now has one bar of extended 3G, but the MiFi hotspot in the Wilson Sleek cradle has 3 bars of 3G. So, we're faster on WiFi. Still takes a couple minutes to upload photos or post, but it works.
