Both directions, when you are near 405 there is a reader board with travel times to Seattle and Bellevue. If they are equal, it doesn't matter. If there is a big difference, take the shorter one. If you can, use the express lanes through Seattle. (They go north half the day, south the other half). I suppose you could also use the toll lane on 405 but know they will tack on a "bill by mail" fee.

Tacoma is often worse than Seattle and Everett north can be horrendous, too. Time it right and it is all good, barring rolled over semis.
