After seeing it on Leon and Lindy's 21, I put a strip of this across our rear bumper:

(wish I could find bigger versions of that message.... no luck yet)

I'm just trying to figure out ways to warn idiot drivers behind us that I am going 55!

another sign option.... i could add the #'s "55" at the bottom right corner of the sign

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00U3OJTVY

(99% of our driving would be in the USA, given where we live, and that we are not retired, and take short-ish vacations.)

Hi: Losangeles... The bumper sticker on my tug says "I'm driving as fast as I can afford". The one on the trailer states " I go where I'm towed too!".
I'd be concerned that the slow moving vehicle sign might come back to bite me!!! Alf

I would say that at 55 mph on the freeway we most certainly ARE going significantly less than surrounding traffic. ....
You are driving at a speed that is actually quite slow compared to other traffic on most secondary highways, and dangerously slow compared to other traffic on the freeways. Consistently driving at speeds slower than the majority of traffic on a roadway is actually quite dangerous. Having traffic brake and slow down rapidly immediately behind you is not due to others being poor drivers or distracted drivers, it is due to you operating your vehicle in an unsafe manner much slower than the flow of traffic around you. My advice to you would be to either speed up to much closer to the average speed of traffic around you, or get off the freeways and travel on roads with speed limits closer to those you are comfortable driving at. You and everyone around you will be happier and safer.

As I mentioned earlier - California State Law says 55 MPH if you are towing anything.

I'm not going to break the law!

I'm not the problem. Other bad drivers are the problem.

Trailer Speed Limits - AAA Digest of Motor Laws

and.... there are tons and tons of people towing various things in California - some go 55 to both respect the law, and to have less velocity to make braking and avoidance better...... but some towing folks drive faster, and some crazy fast.

I'm not alone in going 55 mph towing in Southern California. Not all. Many go 55 mph.

I'm just trying to be more visible.

Always amazes me when I see someone towing a fishing boat on a trailer with those tiny wheels, cruising at about 75 mph. I often wonder how many people towing trailers know what the actual speed rating of their tires is.

There should not that great of a disparity between 55 and 65 or even 70 mph along the freeways is there, If so, put your blinkers on like trucks do when driving slower than the max limit.

You raise a good point, in that I bet the vast majority of folks pulling trailers have no idea of maximum speed ratings, I sure never used to even though I towed a lot. Even with my own tent trailer with 13" wheels, I drove all the time up to 70 mph, putting on thousands of miles doing so, fortunately with never having an issue.

Not sure where the education needs to come from though.

Perhaps if more people contacted the police and asked for an "escort" to provide safety towing at the posted speed like the OP is saying, the police would crack down on those around who are not providing a safe distance from a slow moving vehicle.

I think the biggest problem arises when the road is busy, and patience is wearing thin. Then you add to those doing 10-15 mph less than the average, and throw in a handful of those doing 10-15 over, and you have a recipe for disaster.

If there is minimal traffic on the road, and there are two lanes or more in each direction, then there would be little issue with those needing to pass the slower vehicles.

I personally think it is a big mistake to have different speed limits on the same road. In the ideal situation, everyone would drive exactly the same speed, pretty much lowering the chance of conflict in all lanes in that direction to near nil.

Good point, one speed for everyone, except big trucks, they scare me.

While these trucks may seem scary, they really aren't. Having driven them myself, I know that they are pretty much as easy to handle on the open road, and for any normal braking they perform quite well. Emergency braking though is not quite so good when they are fully loaded.

I have mentioned this here before, but when travelling through the mountains while towing my trailer, for the most part I like to be among the truckers. They have WAY more respect for the road than the average driver.

There are some idiots driving these big trucks though.

towing at 55 mph I'm following the state law. I'm not going any slower.

and I don't think towing with hazards on, all the time, is legal, in CA

and

can we please get this thread back on track?

I'm looking for things to make our 21' Escape more visible from the back.

I'm not looking for insults about how i follow the law, and drive the state speed limit when towing in CA.

by the way, i did not make the law!

Maybe in a place like CA where they have a 55 mph for trailers, it would be safer if that was also the limit for the big rig trucks. That way a larger % of vehicles would be moving at that speed - and maybe make the crazy speeders a bit more wary.

FYI - it IS 55 mph for trucks. (of any kind)

California Highways with 70 MPH Speed Limits

and many trucks DO go 55 mph. Some go 60.

I'm telling all you naysayers... going 55 mph is not a problem in Southern CA.

it is drivers who aren't watching, or who are texing, or who are not using their turn signals, or who are cutting others off.

Given that that is the case, were it me, I'd try to stay behind a big rig truck as often as possible and match its speed (as long as he wasn't going faster than my 65 mph rated trailer tires.)
