They will give you a full set of instructions with the awning, at least we got a copy. In it says this procedure requires a 3/8" wrench (or socket), and a flat bladed screwdriver.

I carry an adjustable wrench, which can address several items, awning, stabilizer,x-chock, water heater, if need be.

Is that wrench metric or imperial.

It rounds the heads of both alike.

I do always carry an adjustable wrench with me, but use it as seldom as possible, preferring to use real combination or socket wrenches.

Adjustable wrenches

The commonly named crescent wrench works ok for me as long as I have a good view of the bolt head, nut, or fitting. If it's blind I hate to use them cause like you say Jim Bennett they like to slip off and ding your hand. I used to hitchhike home from college about 50 years ago. One afternoon while getting out of Ames, Iowa I picked up a 10 inch crescent lying on the road shoulder. I put it in my back pocket. A few minutes later an older lady picked me up and we headed down the highway. She told me she never picked up hikers but could see I was a college boy who must be "all right" about 10 minutes later she looked over at me and saw the wrench in my back pocket. To say the least she was alarmed when I said "Oh This ? I found it along the road and pulled it out of my back pocket. But she calmed down and hauled me to Marshalltown about 30 miles down the road. I still have the wrench.

I agree it can round the head, particularly if used often enough, but with our trailers that should not be an issue, since the wrench is for an emergency. We have the proper sockets already for the stabilizers and X-chocks.

3/8 socket wrench is one thing and 3/8 socket is another. The manual says 3/8 socket size?

I think it says 3/8" wrench, which a 3/8" socket would work plus you now need a socket wrench for the socket which is only for an emergency where the 12v motor stopped functioning.

Not sure exactly what you are asking, what about my post was unclear?

The wrench could be a combination with a 3/8 angled open wrench on one end and a 3/8 box wrench on the other end or a 3/8" socket. The socket could be a 1/4 inch, 3/8 inch or 1/2 inch drive but it would still be a 3/8 inch socket.

Nothing, as far as I can see.

The confusion:

Socket wrench systems have a drive size, typically 1/4", 3/8", or 1/2" (plus larger sizes for people working on heavy trucks and large equipment); this is the size of the square end of the ratchet or extension, and the corresponding square hole in the socket. When someone says a 3/8" socket is needed, they mean a socket which is 3/8" across the hexagonal opening... not a 3/8" drive.

So yes, a 3/8" socket, whether the drive size is 3/8" or anything else.

I'll have to dig out my copy of the movie "Strange Brew" and watch it several times so I'm ready for my fishing trip to Manitoba in May.
