Supermoon 2011

We were blessed with clear skies and an opportunity to see the Supermoon.

Re: Supermoon 2011

Details, please, Brian -- do you shoot raw? Speed? Shutter? Aperture?
A fantastic picture.

Re: Supermoon 2011

majaross:

You can find the Flickr posting of the picture here: Supermoon 2011

This picture was taken as a jpeg, perhaps should have been taken raw. I had to experiment to find the correct settings to get the detail. I used f/11 because my telephoto is sharpest there. Spot metering gave close to the right exposure, but it was a bit too bright and some detail was lost, so I adjusted to -1.7 EV. I used a tripod and remote shutter release to reduce shake. I did final cropping and light adjustment in Photoshop Elements 9.

Thanks for your comments!

Brian

Hi: bvansnell... WOW!!! Thanks for that moon shot. I'm sure on enlarging the image, I can see spots of "Green cheese". Can't see the "Stars and Stripes tho? Alf

Re: Supermoon 2011

we had the same clear view here on PEI also.
made me think of out sitting by the camp fire on a still evening camping. Then i looked arround and seen all the snow cover we still have. Maybe a couple of weeks will help.

Re: Supermoon 2011

The moon is a reflection of daylight so you can get the correct exposure by using the Sunny 16 rule. f16 at the inverse of the ISO. So if one was using ISO 100 then the shutter speed would be approx. 1/100 of a second at f16. In Brian's case using f11 you would have to double the shutter speed because you have opened up the aperture by one stop giving you 1/200 at f11. 1/400 at f8, 1/800 at f5.6 and so on would all give the same exposure.

Re: Supermoon 2011

Barry:

Thank you, I had not heard of the Sunny 16 rule: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunny_16_rule

It seems I got close to what you would have recommended by trial and error. I used spot metering and got 1/125 at f/11 with ISO 100, but then needed to set exposure bias of EV -1.7 to reduce the brightness. That was a bit too much, so I had to make adjustments in post processing with Photoshop Elements 9.

Dan and Alf:

Thanks also for your comments. I was quite prepared to go to sleep last night but my wife insisted I look at the moon. It was so wonderful that I went into the back yard and took pictures until I was satisfied with the result. I understand the next supermoon will be November 14, 2016. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supermoon

Re: Supermoon 2011

Brian

Apparently the moon last night was the closest it's been to the earth in two decades and thus was 30% brighter than normal so that's probably why you were getting some overexposure. The exposure guidelines that used to come with rolls of film are based on the Sunny 16 rule.

If you shoot raw and develop in 16 bit it's amazing how much detail you can extract from the moon in Photoshop by lassoing it and then adjusting the levels or using curves on a separate layer. This works well if you want to balance the moon with a landscape. Here is an example http://bjustice.zenfolio.com/p625167...71e4#h2ef071e4

Re: Supermoon 2011

Brian, thanks for posting your pictures! I had to live in the past... I was sound asleep by time the sun went down last night. When I woke up at 3:30am, I would have run outside to take a look, but it was raining!

Here is my moon and eagle shot taken last year on Vancouver Island.

I just had a look at your website and your Flickr photos -- WOW! You have taken many wonderful landscape pictures!

Re: Supermoon 2011

Very good shot!
My wife called me out last night,
it sure was a great moon sighting.
It would have been better if we were all camping, looking over a lake:-0
Good pics & good people.

Hmm. That's funny. Your moon in Canada looks a lot like our moon here in the states!! :
