Jim, that looks better. The socket doesn't stick up as high (though it could still be a toe-stubber ). Wonder how hard it would be to manipulate the table to get it into that socket? I mean, for one person to do it.

Donna, I have this table on my wish list for either indoor or outdoor use.

Okay, figured out the filler piece and it wouldn't need to be stored except when in full table mode Throw it up on the bed! Forgive my drawing, it's barely above writing on dinner napkin.

The filler piece is that strange shaped piece and it would stay with the half-table underneath the cushion which makes that whole area completely flat.

You may not need the filler, the cushions will fill the space and you can turn the table top 180 degrees and reverse the top and put the openings at the back so it would not matter, the front will be flush..

As long as whomever is sitting along the back doesn't feel like they're sitting in a hole Or worse yet, in bed mode... falling through in a corner...

Donna, with either the extra fill or Jim's suggestion of reversing the end table piece, I think you have it figured out.

If your head has stopped hurting and you want more ideas: two (possibly pneumatic) pedestals for the two table sections. If you can get around the storage problem for the second table, this would give you half or full table options, or U-shaped seating, or full bed. Yes, it has all sorts of downsides...

Another option: you mentioned wanting to use this area as a bed primarily for your granddaughter, which implies only a single bed size required. Maybe a simple short table - just wide enough to make the single bed, and allowing easy seating access - would be a suitable compromise. Just because the area can be an almost "full" or "double" bed doesn't mean you need to use it that way.

Remember Pete Dumbleton (from FiberglassRV)? He had his Scamp setup with a permanent narrow single bed in the rear part of the dinette area, leaving enough space ahead of the bed for a two-person dinette. I'm not suggesting that you use this sort of permanent arrangement, just that not much width is always needed for one person to sleep.

So much to consider. I'm going to build a small cardboard prototype over the winter.... it will either work the way I think it will, or it won't! That's the best part of having months to make decisions. The best part is it doesn't cost me a dime.

I would like to be able to see both dinettes before deciding which way to go, but I agree with you Donna...sometimes I would like NO table. What to do, what to do!

Another possibility to consider, if you're looking for more ideas...

I'm thinking you could design a U-shaped seating area that has the table built into the end bench. When the table is folded down, the table itself forms the end bench and when the table is set up, you have a "traditional" dinette with table and two side benches. This is only suitable, of course, if you only want the U-shaped setup when you're lounging without a table.

So the table is made up of 3 pieces: the end bench back, seat and front riser. 2 hinges hold the pieces together, plus a third hinge attaches the first piece (the bench back) to the wall. You'd need some mechanism to lock the hinges flat when the table is set up -- I can think of a few ways of accomplishing that.

A single leg is needed -- it might be possible to leave it attached (with yet another hinge) to the third bench piece, but it would have to be telescoping otherwise I don't think there'd be room for it. Or it could be a separate piece that's stored when the table isn't set up.

I was thinking of the standard dinette, and then adding a storage cabinet between the benches.
Doug, I think your idea fits right in with that. It could be storage for a table made the right way.

In case anyone is familiar with only the pedestal design and has not seen the wall-mounted hinge hardware and leg traditionally used to make a table than folds down to support a bed (like in my Boler and the older Scamps copied from the original Boler), Scamp still sells it for a whopping $14, along with the folding leg for another $14: Table Hardware and Table Leg.

That does sound like a nice idea . One could perhaps make an ottoman ( removable of coarse ) , just the width and length required to fit over both bowls at once , and have them upholstered in the same fabric as the seats . That could even have a removable top so that when one wants the supports in there - there would not be an additional box to store , just a lid to lift off . That might add to the cosiness of a "living room look " with a u-shaped dinette , and place to put ones feet up !
