Taking Animals Across the Border

We are thinking about taking our cat up with us when we get our trailer. Will this create any problems for us crossing the border?

We took ours across last May. Neither side seemed too concerned but we had proof of vaccinations and a letter from our vet. They were more interested in our eggs.

When I traveled with my cat, I also brought along copies of her recent vet visits (besides her vaccinations and rabies shot records), just in case I had to visit a vet while I was on the road. That way they're know her current medical history.

Travel by boat into the U. S. several times a year with Golden Retrievers. You require proof of vaccinations especially rabies signed in a letter by your vet. No other requirements.

For both dogs and cats, all that is required is proof of rabies vaccination only. Many people wrongly believe that a full set of current vaccinations is needed.

Our dog is current with rabies shots so we can cross the border with him, but has not had any other vaccinations since the initial ones in 8 years now, just as with most humans. A couple years ago when getting his rabies shots, we did opt to do a Titer test on Jasper, and it showed his immunization levels to be good.

Yes, have a signed letter from your vet proving the rabies vaccination is current.

The only request I received when crossing the boarder was to roll down the window so they could see the dog.

Rules can vary. US Border Services at Roche Harbour asked me on three occasions last year for proof of a full set of vacinations. Their definition of a "full set" is open to interpretation but it was clear that it was more than rabies.

I have never been asked for any certification of any type of vaccination myself, but I know of a couple people that did, and both were asked for rabies only, and the border crossing regulations only ask for that, so I would bet if push came to shove you should be able to get away with just that.

When we were planning a trip to Canada we took our dog to the vet to get all his shot up to date . The vet gave us a form showing that that he had been examined and all inoculations were current which he signed in blue ink. He told us the blue ink was to show that the form and signature was an original and not a photocopy. We were also asked for proof that our dog had his rabies shots at a state park in the southern US

Note that you need the rabies certificate.
That tag on the dogs collar isn't enough.
