From the classified archives it is apparent that the front window on 17's changed from slider (with a thicker more pronounced rock shield) to a fixed window sometime during the 2009 model year.

Glenn: How does the emergency exit window work? Is it an awning type like the 19? If so, maybe Mike can utilize that window.

Ok I see now. When you said early on that you were buying used I automatically figured in the U.S.

Driver side emergency exit window at rear dinette opens awning style. I've never opened it myself.

Coincidentally, the one I'm buying is a 2008 like yours, Glenn. I've seen the opening front window in a photo of it.

I'm getting pretty excited about picking it up. I have been watching for about 5 years for one that I felt I could afford. Must wait until later spring, though, for several reasons (affecting both parties).

Mike - the emergency window measures 30"w X17"h ( the glass inside the frame ). Not sure how far it opens.
My front window is frozen shut, but the pane that opens is 20"w X 15"h. If we thaw out, I'll open it and get another measurement.

Thanks very much, Glenn. It's looking pretty good! At 15" high I could probably put it through on a diagonal if necessary.

The emergency windows usually open quite wide, so as to allow passage of a human body. But the screen (if present) probably won't slide on that window and would need to be removed, so if mosquitos are present that window would not be my first preference!

I was wondering how you would seal the rest of the emergency window to prevent drafts.

All though not idea...you should be able to clip the emergency window screen back in...but over 2 inches or more. Only the top and bottom clips will be holding and you would need to fill the gap with a strip of foam.

Opening portion of front window on 2008 17B measures 19" wide and 15 /2" tall. Keep in mind radius corners.

That will work! Thanks! with only 8" thickness of the indoor unit, the corners won't be any problem.

I hope for your sakes that your ability to get this measurement indicates you've had a thaw! It does surprise me a bit that it is only a 19" wide opening. Looking at pictures, I guessed it would be two feet or more. It pays to ask about these things when in doubt. Judging scale from photos can be difficult.

Well the overall window has radius corners, so the sliding window can only open so far.

Yup, we are above 0 degrees C. And it's sunny. Should go out and check on the rhubarb.

Follow up..

Just curious, has anyone tried the ForestAir unit yet? Looking for some feedback on how well it works and what did you to for the install?

I ended up buying a different brand name that looked visually exactly like the ForestAir (except the logo), and was so disappointed I returned it. It couldn't cool worth a hoot.
