At my second beer exchange I just gave up. Brought six beers for me and six for the exchange, and my camera to shoot pix.

Anybody know how to run a civilized beer exchange?
Yup. My suggestion:

- Everyone participating must contribute at least a 6 pack, and no bargain basement Schlitz, Coors, PBR, Budweiser, Keystone, etc. allowed.

- Everyone participating draws a number from the hat.

- People pick by the order of the draw.

- People get to fill a 6 pack with up to TWO bottles each of the beer of their choice. If they bring two six packs, they can fill two, but each 6 pack they bring must be different brands.

- Anyone can swap with anyone else if they agree and don't like their choices.

- In the end, each participant will have at least one 6 pack of GOOD beer, and at least 3 different labels to try. Done!

Yep, Robert is running the beer exchange next year.

That is pretty much what my thoughts were, except not more than one of any beer.

I have done similar exchanges, and when you draw numbers, you run through 1 to ?, then reverse the order with the next round.

One of the issues faced, is that half of the people show up with their beer after the exchange starts, so this messes things up too.

No real worries though, as everyone gets to try something different, and share a beer they like. All is good.

Great idea Robert. I would like to see this scheduled by the organizer of every egg event. Scamp Camp in Sebring typically starts with a chili dump, but just think, chili AND good beer!

We would definitely have no shortage of Natural Gas Carl. Too bad the trailers use propane!

I don't know how civilized it is, but at the NOGs... it starts with CRAFT beer. We don't put them out on a table. You carry your six pack of craft beer around in the group, and exchange one bottle for another. It gets people interacting with one another instead of acting like storm troopers swarming a table. Only lasts about 5-7 minutes tops, then everyone really starts talking. Surprisingly people like to talk about the craft beer they brought to exchange. But without knowing who brought it... how would you know who to talk to?

Good point. If the point is to be social and not just 'fair', your method would probably work better.

That makes sense to me. With all the craft breweries, the story around the microbrewery as well as the location made is a great opener for conversation.

I like the NOG model. It doesn't require anybody to police it and promotes interaction.
I nominate Robert and Donna to discuss with Tammy at the rally.

Actually, needs to be done prior to the rally since Tammy provides an agenda ahead of the rally.

I've already told Tammy... she can use me and abuse me during the rally. Call me a sherpa, slave or chief herder of cats! Half the fun of gatherings, is helping! I'm not interested in stepping on toes or traditions. The NOGS and OG.. we just do craft beer exchanges differently.

I like to think, craft beer exchanges started at gatherings... by ME! For those that don't know the history how it started at the Oregon Gathering ten years ago. Talk to me at the Escape Rally.... the reason is a hoot!
