For those of you that have traveled over the Alaskan (can-am) highway what ply tires have you used? My Tundra has the stock 2ply on it, and was wondering if I should up grade. From what I am reading the highway is vastly improved from what it was 20 yrs ago. But I know there are rough spots. Any opinions?
I wouldn't worry about it. My Goodyear FuelMax tires on the RAV4 & Maxxis tires on the trailer did fine, as well as friends towing a Scamp with 13" tires using a stock Toyota Sienna van.
While there were a few rough spots, nothing worse than I've driven in the lower 48...
I would be more concerned about my suspension and rock dings than tires.
The only rough section is between Destruction Bay and the border at Beaver Creek. Lots of frost heave sections that are usually marked by orange cones or skid marks if no orange cones. Just slow down and you will be fine. I don’t know if this section of road is going to get worse in the coming years because of the US decision to cut funding for the Shakwak Project.
You may want to check the load range of your existing tires which should be a minimum load range B which I believe is a 4-ply if they are LT tires & a maximum tire pressure of 35 psi.
I wouldn't expect to see this light-weight of a tire on a Tundra, perhaps more of a C or even D load rated tire but hey, you never know.
Generally the higher the load rating, the higher the tire pressure & load capacity.
