There's clearly several hidden, secret computers in the '14 Silverado. They rule seamlessly, everything from the door locks (?!) to the lights to the transmission and the variable valves, and--of course-- a fascinating digital dashboard display which tells me my current mpg, my mpg the last 50 to 400 miles, and my best ever mpg (30.5) plus other stuff like current tire pressure, how much life is left in my oil, etc. Sensors for everything! It gets mesmerizing, has me wondering how I will cope when it all crashes.

Yep, these all replace the little notepads we used to carry around in the glove box and fill out every time we got gas, price, amount, mpg, the little sticker on the door jamb that told us the last oil change and we had to subtract the current mileage to determine when we had to change oil again. All of the mental fun of driving has been taken over by computers...

Yes , each door has a module to control all electrical function , the instrument panel is a module , along with the radio , trailer brake control module/fuel pump along with many others all talking on high speed data line with the body control
Module as the power mode master to control everything except the PCM which although on the high speed data line pretty much operates independently , prett much all cars are like this now and it's a infinitely better system. Although as they grow in size and complexity the programming updates are taking longer

I worked in the auto industry on antilock brakes. We were constantly flashing software changes into units during production and sometimes even at dealers. The complexity level is so high that is almost impossible to test for every situation. Makes for amazing technology but also fuels many recalls.

After that taxes enter the playing field and you start to understand/learn there is no such thing as one Europe.

Thanks. I wondered if it might be just cost, but I am surprised to hear that anything is cheaper in Germany than the rest of Europe... especially that the base price is lower. That's an interesting bit to learn.
