Travelling light?

It always puzzled me how the loaded weight can be so much higher than the empty weight. We don't pack much and seem to leave plenty of nice to have "stuff" at home when we head out.

Well....we unpacked our 19 to prep it for new owners (Cindi and Scott aka CindiShoe) and were amazed at how many "essentials" ended up in the trailer! Check this out! Our goal is to leave have of this behind when we repack the 21. Can it be done Stay tuned...

That's all you have and you're trying to reduce it more? I like having my good stuff with me, you never know when you'll need something. No sense having it at home. Seriously, I have several more containers than that to load before each trip. But, yes, it does start to add up.

Good luck on your weight reduction program.

If you just left your plane behind, you might have more space.

Seriously though, we regularly go through things and remove stuff we rarely use, or don't use at all. A lot of this stuff we thought was a good idea to bring, something we could make use of, but just did not pan out that way. A lot of it for us was to give us more space for what we did use and not have things cramped, as well as to save us some space.

Now with more tow capacity, I often wonder how much I will bring eventually, once we retire and start travelling more. Already I have added an inflatable canoe I hope to bring along on every trip, as well as an electric trolling motor (and battery) that I will take some times too. We will see how that works out.

Bikes too often go with us, though not always.

It seems to be the basics that we always take, that take the least room, maybe because we have developed a set of stuff that works for our style over the years.

I once read that you could put a piece of painters tape on everything in your trailer, and as you used it, remove and discard the piece of tape. After a year or so, go through your inventory and see how many things still have a piece of tape on them. I'm afraid I'd still have a lot of tape I couldn't put back on the roll.

That's what makes the difference in our case. With the canopy on the truck there's just so much cargo capacity, not to forget the two kayaks on the roof racks, that we do tend to use it. Yup, I've dragged some stuff around for great distances and never used it. Still, it's nice to have it when you want it.

I agree with Ron, a fella needs some good stuff with him. I tried cutting back but found that if something hadn't been used for the last year if I left it at home then for sure I would need it next trip out. Only rational solution was to buy a bigger truck. [emoji6]
I'm surprised by how light some people can travel and how much others take. I think everyone has their own comfort level and needs which of course must be balanced out against the maximum trailer and tow vehicle ratings.

I pack the trailer quite light, but I make up for it by filling the back of the truck. Can never bring too much beer!

We go through every winter and if it hasn't been touched in a year it comes out and most of the time it ends up in a minor disagreement.

The exception is my stuff but I only get one drawer anyway and she is always questioning what I have in the back of the truck.

Hey Greggo,

Was this you at the Mcd's in Quartzsite a few years ago? If I'd known I'd given you a shout.

Nope, but it looks like a guy that just got booted out of the house!
