We have had tons of snow in Calgary, we 10" of accumulated heavy wet stuff on our roof. Lots and lots of broken trees. Some roads were impossible to drive down with large branches strewn across them. Wild stuff.

Shorts and t-shirt weather this weekend though, go figure.

This is very rare. Heck, the leaves on the trees were nowhere near turning yet.

Fortunately, the forecast for next weekend looks very favourable for our 5 day canoe trip high up in the Rocky Mountains.

Good point, and the leaves are the reason for all of the tree damage that has occurred, as the leaves hold an enormous weight of snow. We have had the same problem several years ago with an exceptional May snowfall, after the leaves were all out.

It's also too early for crops, with most of the grain not harvested yet and the snow causing degradation of the grain and huge losses for some farmers. As one farmer said in a TV interview yesterday, they don't need to go to Vegas to take risks.

Decided to take cover somewhere with power (Cody Wy) for a couple days till this is past. Got about 6" (15cm) so far.

The trailer works great down into the 20's (-6C) with our little electric cube heater running.

Whatever cube heater you buy, save the box and receipt. I went through a couple before I found one with a fairly quiet fan.

On the cube heater theme...
Any electric heater that is sized for as much power as allowed for a normal 15 amp circuit will put out the same amount of heat: 1500 watts. The only difference in heating effectiveness will be due to its ability to distribute the heat through the trailer, which in the case of a forced-air heater means the ability of the fan to circulate air - but that's significant.

Cube heater, Sunbeam SCH160, cheap unit at WM probably 7 or so years old. We leave a white noise machine running all night out of habit, fan noise doesn't intrude. Wish it had a digital setting. We have it on the floor when we're in the cabin, move it to on the sink cover at night blowing towards the loft.

I do have the sprayed on foam, no heat pads, extra insulation and all thermal pane windows. Opened the lower cabinets where food is stored as well as the seat over the water heater for the night. Sounds like we'll be doing it again tonight. They've drained the water in the CG.

Another good day for the Buffalo Bill Museum which conveniently is a 2 day pass. Pretty impressive.

Actually we're enjoying the snow, the unexpected seems to make for a more memorable trip and I wanted to try the trailer out in this kind of weather later in the year anyway.

I've mentioned my favorite cube heater before, but here it is again - a Pelonis Disk Furnace, Model 1500W-II. While mine is old (a 1989 version) I believe they are still making a modern version with the same capabilities.

What I like about it is the controls. In Manual, output can be set at 300, 500, 850, 1200, or 1500 watts; on Automatic, you set the temperature & the heat output (and fan speed) slows down as it reached the desired temperature. It is almost completely silent when it reached the set temperature. If the temperature goes down, it increases the wattage & fan speed. It keeps my 17' at 70°F down to freezing outside temperatures at almost silent fan speeds.

We had one that did this. Although it doesn't make any difference when maximum heat output is needed, it certainly makes the heater more pleasant to use the rest of the time!

We have a thermostat on ours which someone told us to get. Glad we have that because another of our cubes does not.
