Yet another Texan headed to Chilliwack!

My wife, Dora, and I started our trek today to Chilliwack, BC, for a January 16th orientation date on our 21' Escape travel trailer. Our first leg took us 573 miles and landed us in Las Cruces, NM. We saw a caravan of 4 hippie vans and a beautiful view of the Organ Mountains, near Las Cruces, as the last rays of sun shone on them. Tomorrow will bring new adventures!

Regards,

Hi Fred,

Did you try to register your trailer in Texas before you left? I'm interested since I'm going to try and do the same in April.

Have a great trip!

FYI (for everyone else), here are my previous posts on registering a new trailer in Texas: http://www.escapeforum.org/forums/f9...exas-8978.html. See posts #1 and #51 for what I found out about this process.

Hi Thomas, I tried unsuccessfully to have a discussion with the Polk County Tax Office. They wouldn't budge. They did tell me I could submit the paperwork by mail, once I picked it up. But, I am skeptical about that too. Just to be clear, I called them instead of driving 5 hours to the tax office.

I wish I lived in Travis County so Maria could handle it.  Wah!!! 

Just for anyone's information, this is what happened to someone else. They wanted Livingston as their address and started using it, the Escapees address. Unfortunately, they were staying in another county when they went to do registrations. I can only guess that the clerk did not know what he or she was supposed to be doing and refused the Livingston address. The county then had them register in their county, not Livingston's, using an address where they were staying temporarily. These people then switched their address back to Livingston's county. But your vehicles are supposed to be registered in your county of residence as far as I know. So they now have a problem.

You really need to do this in the county you want for a residence. It may be worth the drive.

Hi Float5,

Well, since we travel full time and need a mail forwarding service like Escapees, our official address is in Livingston. Once we have the trailer, it should not be a problem to get our plate. I was just trying to be proactive and wanted to have the plate in hand when we picked up our trailer. Oh well.

Regards,

Regards,
Livingston clerks are very familiar with fulltimers and Escapees. Not the case necessarily in other counties. Escapees members can call Escapees if there is a problem registering.

I tried to get 30 day plates in Chambers county and the clerk said that they would not issue one. Registration was out of the question until the trailer was in Chambers county and had completed VIN inspection. I tried to get the 30day plates online and it said to see your local office. I knew were that was going to go so no luck.

In Sabine county I just walked in and got registration and plates. The title came later and it says on it, "No VIN inspection".
A friend in Austin registered hers before pickup also with no issues.

Ok, so what are you doing about tags? How are you getting it home? Our county won't give us plates either. I have not tryed online yet as we pick ours up in May. Does escape provide temp dealer tags?

Wisconsin is tough to get plates beforehand also. If we don't have them before pickup, I'm just going to show the paperwork from ETI and explain that WI will not issue a plate on the new trailer until I get it back home. This time, though I am going to get ours all paid off early so Tammy can send all the paperwork as soon as practical for her, take it into the DMV and not mention that the trailer is still in Canada.

When we got the 17 we still have to do the import process ourselves, but I think now that ETI handles that that Tammy can send more of the paperwork.

This is interesting with the reaction from different counties. We live in San Jacinto County and had no problem getting an online 30 day temp tag and registered our 19 when we returned in September 2015.

We obtained our plates when the trailer was not paid in full. We simply provided the Escape paperwork which shows the total amount that is owed for the trailer. That was used to charge us the tax and issue plates. The paperwork is sent about a month before pick-up. No telling what they will do in Wisconsin (or any particular clerk.)

No, you can easily purchase a 30 day permit online. You can even do it multiple times, and choose the effective date.

Have you explained your situation to your County Tax Assessor and Probate Judge and asked them about your options. There must be a legal solution. Alabama won't pre-issue tags either, but State law gives new owners 30 days from date of purchase to get the tags.
As I understand it, we would just need to carry a dated Purchase Agreement/Bill of Sale (or information such as the paperwork Tammy sends us) and proof of insurance until we can get to our county courthouse. Since we're having our camper delivered, it won't be a problem. If we planned to pick it up in Chilliwack then spend a couple months touring on our way back home, that could be a problem. Anyway, it seems your local tax assessor and probate judge should be able to offer you a legal solution - even if it's just a personalized "Get Out Of Jail Free" card.

My wife and I just picked up our 21 this last October 12th. And towed it from Sumas, Washington all the way across the country to central New York State, unregistered, no plate, took a full 4 weeks to get home, no problems!
I could not get a plate or temp plate either. Went to 3 different Motor Vehicle Departments and got the same story. No import paper, no registration!
Called Tammy to see if i could get a temporary from ETI. They can't, different country. She said for me to go to the motor vehicle department in Lynden WA. Before we picked it up and get a 'Washington State Trip Permit'. So thats what we did. They are good for 3 days each and cost me 30 dollars each. I got 5 for 150.00. Yes it was an extra 150 spent, but priceless for piece of mind! You tape them in the rear window of the trailer, we got checked out by 2 different police officers in South Dakota and Missouri and was sent on our way.
If anyone wants more information, just pm me.

When stopped, did they ask you the trailer situation? I hate to say but think you wasted that money. You should only need to explain and/or show your paperwork. I am sure that the Washington permit is for within Washington only and/or Washington cannot issue permits for travel in other states unless maybe you are a Washington resident. Someone might want one for Washington but doubt it has anything to do with this situation anyway. Anyone who wants to see about it can look at the Washington state info on it. They obviously did not mind taking your money though.
