12 voltoutlet

looking for information

Are the 12 DC volt outlets in 5.0 TA "positive hot" outlets?
I understand "positive hot" is also referred to as " negative ground "

My 12 volt device can be damaged if not connected to a positive hot system.
thanks

It should be but I would test it with a voltmeter. The center pin should be positive and the shell negative. Sometimes Escape makes wiring errors.

Not sure what you mean by positive hot since positive is the definition inion of hot. In any case, the 12V receptacles wired by Escape has the center pin hot or positive & the shell or outside negative or at ground. Hope this helps...

No, "hot" is just the opposite of ground or neutral. All modern cars have a negative ground, so positive is hot; however, decades ago some were positive ground, so negative was hot in those vehicles. That reversal of normal practice is the potential issue.

That's what is needed, and I agree with Tom that it is wise to check.

.
Ah, electrical wiring and British cars. Sounds strange now to say positive ground. Sure did lead to some mix-ups with non-British mechanics. Of course that also came with British cars having 12 volt systems and American cars still having 6 volt systems. Heard an American car start up using a 12 volt battery. Didn`t burn anything up and it sure turned over fast.
