Since I got my trailer I was thinking of doing a fold=away tray there, but I was always thinking dual action. Your idea of keeping it simple is a good one though, why complicate things. Pretty sure I could get some brownie points for anything to use there though.

Just wish I had more time to work on the list of mods I have in mind to do. Boy do I need to retire, or at least semi-retire.

Ah, don't want to rain on your parade but I've come to the conclusion it doesn't work that way. My theory is that a busy working guy becomes a busy retired guy

Ron,
Thanks for the details. What type of stop did you use to hold the table in the level position?

It's a mechanical stop. You can see it in the upper left area. I slotted it a tiny bit so that I could adjust it so that the swing up counter could be adjusted to stop perfectly level. If there is such a thing in a trailer.

The white disk is just a poly washer so that the movement isn't metal on metal.

Thanks. I didn't realize that you had the pivot and stop in one unit. Very nice. I'm designing my version of your shelf now.

Alf, yes crackers in bed, used to be a standard by which prospective sleeping companions were judged. ( how's that for veiled political correctness?)

I'll be interested to see your version. It's nice to have it this way because when you don't need it, it's really out of the way.

"political correctness" Sometimes it's not what you say, but how you say it.

Ron,
My version will be not as elegant as yours. I don't have the metal fabrication capability that you do, e.g. no welding capability, so mine will be made of wood mostly, which I am very comfortable with. I am also 1000 miles from ETI so I won't be able to stop by and pick up a piece of countertop. But still, we want an extension and your basic design looks good to us.

Ron, what are the dimensions of the table, maybe I missed it somewhere?

And you don't live as close as Baglo so you can't drop by and twist my arm into making one for you.

Wood should work just fine. Something like a vertical 1 x 2 or 3 would probably be quite suitable. The critical area would be the junction between the vertical support and the table. In most situations you could just use a gusset to strengthen the joint. But in this case, because the assembly has to retract down the space between the mattress and the wall, a gusset might be in the way. Perhaps a pieces of angle aluminum, making a low profile gusset would work.

I'll be interested to see the finished result.

The counter area measures 10 1/4" x 24". Part of the design process was looking at how much space was required to "park" two dinner plates there. We've really used it a lot and, if I was to do it again, that's still about the size I'd go with.

Thanks for the dimensions, I have some nice plywood and about 2/3 of a sheet of Formica left over from making the fold down smaller table for use with the u shaped dinette. I showed that project to CPA Harley and we calculated that I only had about $600 in that project. So this could be gravy.

I took a different approach for my counter extension. It is not swing out but removable. Why? Because I was comfortable building it this way. The table top is 13" x 24" and is held in place with Z clips. Note that there are two extra Z clips used as spacers so that the shelf is sturdy when mounted. To mount it, I just drop it down on to the clips. To remove it, I just lift it off, and tuck it at the end of the bed. I cut a hole in the mounting board to allow access to the 120V outlet if needed. It's made of oak plywood with an oak 1"x4" for the mount and support boards which are attached with 'biscuits."

One more photo: the shelf in its storage position at the foot of the bed.

That's a great idea. What stops it from tipping when you put weight on the outside end?

The 6 pack that will sit on the window end....

Definition of "tipsy" is when you've drunk too many and the table tips.

I suspect a consensus is forming that it's more fun to eat (or drink) dinner in bed than at the dinette.

Whoa...not for me. In fact, the older I get, the more important that I treat myself--including when I'm out camping. So it's dinner at the table with cloth napkins, a wine glass and the whole enchilada. But then I'm usually camping during winter and shoulder seasons so the weather isn't that great and it's dark outside.

Maybe a little variety, not just enchiladas. :-)
