Jon,
What is the difference in your original and replacement upper refer grill. Are you concerned with mud wasps or other insects getting thru the stock grill as there is no screen behind?

No difference - Reace looked at the old one - it had been taken off so many times it was looking a bit shabby, so he gave me a new one.

In your write-up of the mods you made, you say you added a refrigerator fan; was it inside or out? I have been looking at adding an exterior fan but first added baffling to see if that would help keep the refrigerator cooler. I'm about done with adding an interior one (attached to the evaporator fins) and was looking for ways others have attached it.

I've got one of each. The inside is one from Camping World that runs for a month on 2 "D" batteries. I keep it on the shelf below the cooling fins.

The exterior fan is mounted to the inside center of the top grill and is powered from the outside light circuit. I included a switch so I only run it when the outside temperature is above 90°F.

I've also added insulation around the refrigerator, aluminum tape sealing the back from the sides, an aluminum curved baffle to seal off the top & a second baffle just above the lower grill that helps move the outside air over the cooling components. All additions per Dometic's Venting PDF.

Thanks Jon. I used the blue fan from Camping World but am now wiring 2 small fans mounted to the evaporator fins to see if that moves the air better; the blue fan seemed to be of marginal use especially if the refrigerator was packed full. I, too, added the baffling as shown in the PDF that you referenced but haven't had hot weather to see if it helps.

We also bought the little battery-operated aerator from Camping World. It seems to have done pretty well at keeping items from freezing in the refrigerator section. We never have it packed full. In fact, we don't use half of the refrigerator space we have.
