21' under bed drawer specs

Escape Community
We are scheduled to pick up our new 21 footer on February 22nd.
One of the mods we are looking at is the under bed drawer to take advantage of the extensive storage area available. I've tracked back on the last 10 pages of the "Mods" thread and see some creative solutions to adding either gas cylinders or braces to hold up the plywood and access the space. I've seen a few thumbnails on drawers installed but no details.
I'm concerned about mounting drawer runners with screws and puncturing the tank underneath. Can someone either direct me to the appropriate thread or share the details on a successful installation?
Thanks in advance for your help.

I know the fresh tank is under the dinette floor and the black tank is under the bed and visible. The remaining gray tank is either over or in front of the axles, but not sure it it extends to under the bed?

Thanks for the quick reply cpaharley2008. Much appreciated. Let's see what other members of the Escape Community have to say. I'll also contact ETI for a plantop view of the 21' so we can see what is underneath. Regards. Jim Tischer

Jim,

I built my drawer setup as a sub-assembly that drops into the space under the 21 bed and uses the stock door location of access. That made it simple to build; the drawer has to clear the door floor side opening where the water lines are run.

The floor itself is half inch plywood between the fiberglass, the mounting layer of my setup let me use a dozen wood screws to hold it down; fair amount of torque at full 36 inch extension with 250lb slides.

I removed one of the screws from the underbed framing to see how deep into the floor the ETI screws penetrated - but I don't recall what that was!

Charlie, thanks for the info. This is a "gotta have" on my 21. Thinking of a smaller drawer for the bed side if I get a door there too and some pull outs. Don't want to commercialize the forum so I'll PM you about these.

I'm Sterlite's #1 customer, it's going to be nice to have drawers instead of stashing plastic bins all over the inside.

Thanks from over here, too, Charlie. I'm going to copy your design; I ordered the same slides and found a drawer online as well (mine won't be as elegant -- birch plywood instead of hardwood). Should be a fun project and I won't have to reach back in there any more for "my" clothes tub, which for some reason has become the one stuffed further back, behind DW's.

I took Charlie's idea and installed a drawer glide I purchased from an online store, I believe Amazon. It actually took two units as the upper portion (not shown) has to extend further under the bed. I based the 3/4 inch screws on the ones I had from the pedestal mount on my 19. They were countersunk just enough so the other half of the glide could pass. I believe I had to shim the glide so it would clear the water lines, I believe 1/4 inch.

Since I wanted shoe storage I mounted two plastic storage boxes on the glide. Mine is a long pull at 36 inches. It extends into the room about 30 inches but still fits a folded lawn chair inserted through the hatch.

This is excellent and very helpful.
A Question? What are the approximate inside dimensions of the finished drawer? It looks to be about 14" or so high by about 14" wide by 30-36"? Quite a bit of useful extra storage space "scalped" out of the underneath the bed.
Nice Work!
Thanks to all replies.

One drawback I have found is the drawer will cause a loss of access to the remaining space. Oh, you can access it from the lid under the mattress but that is a two person job unless you add another mod of some sort of hydraulic lift. I am not convinced the lift gives you good access and ease of use. If you are going to do the drawer you might consider having Escape add the second door to that area, this would be just outside the bathroom.

I have an extra door from Escape and am contemplating installing it at this location. We would use it as a clothes hamper.

You are pretty close on dimensions behind the door but I cannot measure. My guess is 14 wide by 15 high.

Where did you order the drawer from? Not having a table saw, I am going to either order a drawer or have a local carpenter construct one. I think this is a great mod!

I ordered the drawer from Lakeside Moulding. Less expensive than what Charlie used, and aesthetically inferior, but leaves money over for beer. Looks like I have to assemble the drawer box when it arrives, but I think I can handle that...

If you have Escape add an access door on the bath side of the 21 bed pedestal, be sure to ask that it be rearward enough to open the added door 90 degrees to pull your drawer out without having to open the bathroom door first. I wasn't aware of the interference issue, so when I made a shoe box I discovered the bath door has to be open to pull my shoe drawer out.

It's a divided box I can slide out and use a hose to clean after sticking muddy shoes in it.

The black tank is under the 21 bathroom; toilet is fastened to it! No space there.

That is a second great addition to underbed storage.
It would seem that the request to ETI is for: 1. An under bed access door facing the dining area, (Acces Door 1#) and 2. An underbed access door on the bathroom side with adequate clearance to allow Access Door 2# to open without having to open the bathroom door.
Do I understand correctly?
Thank You
Jim Tischer

You got it right. I've installed a couple of "shoe drawers" for customers on the bath side where they requested that clearance and had no problems - just not sure that it's a standard ETI placement yet.

Also request that ETI place the floor support rail on the water heater side of the vertical bed support struts. The installers place them on either side, but if it is on the side nearest your access door #1 it will interfere with the drawer slides about 3/4 inch so you have to install a narrower drawer, or move it as I have done for customers.
