21 wardrobe area

Hi, we just put in an order for a 21' escape and were toying with the idea of taking out the microwave cabinet and putting in a full size wardrobe closet. Where do others hang their jackets? Any ideas welcome.

There is plenty of room to hang jackets in the 21' stock closet underneath where the microwave is installed. I opted out the microwave and use that space for a pantry, it comes with a 120v plug handy for charging built in.

Be careful with what you plug in there Jim, and ensure it has good ventilation when you do. Other than for a microwave, it is actually illegal in Canada to have an outlet installed in a cabinet. The rational is that a microwave will come with an adequate power cord, whereas lots of other 120V items do not. I believe that Escape actually labels them for microwave use.

Yes, the wardrobe is quite roomy but if you want more space, they would likely give it to you. When you sell though, never know if any prospective buyers would want that space for a microwave and the electrical for it. That can be a selling point.

Our microwave cabinet has been a pantry since day one too, and hold most of our dried goods. Bulky items (bread, chips, etc) went in a cabinet over the dinette.

I am Jim, I just keep a rechargeable flashlight plugged there.

Just goes to show how different folks have different needs. We had Escape install shelves in the "closet" and we use it for a pantry - and love it. We simply didn't need a closet, since all our camping clothes can go in one of the overhead cabinets.

We tend to keep heavy food items including canned goods in lower cabinets and use the wardrobe for clothes, I hate wrinkles in my dinner jacket, dress pants, and white shirts.
Not to mention my camo and Carhartts.

I found that if I raised the clothes bar in the wardrobe a 1/4 inch I was able to store my portable solar panel in the closet. Very nice getting a bulky item like that out of the way.

Everyone has their own needs and desires. We wouldn't be without a microwave and converted the hanging closet to shelves. We either hang our jackets on hooks attached to the walls or just fold them up and put them on a shelf in what used to be the closet.

We didn’t see much space in the 21 for hanging jackets without creating clutter. Since I can create enough clutter myself to drive my wife crazy we decided to keep the closet for hanging. However, we also wanted a pantry for storing food supplies. Since we opted for the oven, we didn’t have the storage compartment below the stove for that purpose. So we were back looking at the closet to pull double duty. We felt that we only needed about 9” of that closet for our jackets and the rest could work for our pantry. With the depth of the closet, we felt that having sliding shelves, or drawers, would make that pantry much more convenient. So, we divided the closet into two parts, one for hanging coats and one for our pantry. The coats are separated from the food with a solid wall and the food is easily accessed using the sliders. So far it’s worked out great for us.

Old post, but I love the idea. Did you do this yourself? Ever wish you had more hanging space than 9"? What hanging clothes do you bring and what's the most you've ever brought in your 9" closet?
