I have no idea how or why this happened. My bathroom door latch stopped catching. Did the door shrink and pull away? Did the framing contract? In any case the spring latch on the door no longer nested into its home on the wall. What a difference a centimeter makes.

Simplest solution: unscrew home base as seen here, add a wood shim to bring it closer to its springed thingo mate on the door.

I had the same thing happen to mine. It has been fine for a couple of years with a shim...

Myron,
My guess is a little both shrinking and contracting . Isn't it amazing what it takes to keep a trailer well tuned.

The problem is in the hinge being a little weak for the door weight. When it gets very slightly tweeked the door changes position. It can also be tweeked back into position so the door latches correctly again.

The problem also is that it's not really designed to be a door hinge. It's a cabinet door hinge. On my long list to to-do's is to replace it with a more suitable hinge, one that allows the door to open 180*. Haven't found a commercial one yet so I might have to fabricate some. Or alternatively, just make a new raised panel door that recesses into the door jamb and uses conventional hinges.

I would like to replace mine, too.

Any of these work?

Use a bigger hammer Did you take a close look at the hinges? They deform really easily and could cause the symptoms you described.

Yes I did. Not deformed, screws are tight, not wiggle-able, ...na-da. Seemed the same to me as the day they were installed, and I know hinges.

I added two more hinges, but not for this reason. I added a mirror to the outside of the door and thought it could use the extra support. I found the exact hinges at Home Depot. So far, so good.

Hi, Myron!!

I have had the rare and distinct privilege of seeing all of Myron's mods up close.

They are so clever. The holders can all be removed with no sign that they were there. The box is impressive. I know one big thing from him: Don't remove the furnace! You will never get it back in there right. The little door he made is very cute. He has good luck, too: needed a structure to cover the Escape and the neighbor had parts of a discarded one that they dug up. Now there is a cover assembly just the right size that Myron put together the way he puts everything together --- very well.

His wife is equally talented, making a beautiful quilt for the bed, and others. Even the dog is smart.

I will go look for shims now! Have to do the bathroom door catch.
Thank you, Myron.

Now listen here my dear, I'm giving you exactly forty-five minutes and then you will simply have to put a lid on that kind of talk.

That thread on black Formica had me longing for a new look for my dinette. Have been thinking about making a smaller table top anyway. In our trailer we seemed to always avoid using the street side bench. Too lazy to slide the table over to get in there, sit, and lock it down again, I guess. We usually threw our luggage bags on the bench.

Went to the dump, found a nice thick piece of discarded countertop stock, cut it to size, routed the edge. Planned to laminate new Formica. Home DePot don’t sell it by the sheet anymore. Lowes had a damaged $90 4x8’ sheet I offered to buy a third of, but they said no.

So I bought a quart of Rustoleum oil-based gloss black and a quart of Minwax Fast Drying Polyurethane clear gloss (6 coats). Original plan was give the surface a piano gloss black look. But my inner Picasso interrupted me, changing everything. I mixed up other scrap colors off the shelf, grabbed a lamb’s wool pad, began to play.

Next, adding shelves on that wall made sense. A place for maps and notebooks, salt and pepper. It’s back is a panel of salvaged cedar from an old armoire I knew I would need some day.

Wow, that's a stunner of a table! Very impressive!

Is the surface completely smooth? Almost looks like there's some texture to it.

Great shelves! Dang!
