Lid on the old tongue box I built never seemed right. Painted the last one several times but paint out here was just not protecting the plywood from weather. Decided to go in a different direction. Built a new lid but, instead of paint, sealed this one with three coats of bondo liquid fiberglass resin. Also set it to a 7 degree angle, so when driving wind will push it down, rain drains off.

Looks real nice Myron ! We have the Escape box and on our lid which they later changed has a sunk area where water etc sits . I want to add to the lid and that is what I came up with add fiberglass to the wood . I have fiberglass cloth from long ago , used to make fish aquarium’s . Fiberglassing the interior wood to keep water in . Made them look like chests . So your new lid will be awesome and work well 👍🏻Pat

Good job Myron. A word of caution though. Unless the resin has UV blocking it just kind of delays the inevitable. The sun will still deteriorate the underlying wood, it'll start looking white and eventually start peeling.
As nice as the wood grain looks I'd paint it to match the box and prevent UV deterioration. The resin will still give it much more protection from moisture.

Thanks guys...I was actually planning to paint over the resin but got surprised how much nicer the wood looked unpainted. No UV blocking info on Resin quart can. Think I will go down the store varnish aisle looking for exterior varnish containing UV protection.

Edited my post above after finding reference to other clear and UV resistant Krylon products claimed suitable for exterior use.

I don't know. I've added colored pigment to clear polyester resin and that seemed to last a long time. Probably not as long as gelcoat but still worked pretty well.
I think that they're UV additives available but I've never used them.

Will sand lightly with 220, then this. UV, exterior grade "superior." Found yesterday, $12 US.

Thanks Ron for your response . If I can find some teak that would be my preferred wood but if not go with some color in the mix Pat
