Smile Alternative to storage box for 19

Hi folks

Has anyone used a truck storage box as an alternative to the standard storage box on the 19?

Also, looks like the standard box is a little wider than the nose of the 19? (looks like it matches width of 21)

Thank you.

Truck storage box may be heavier and larger than the ETI fiberglass box? Need to watch the tongue weight. Also need to consider where the dual 20 lb propane tanks would go - inside the truck box?

Some owners have made their own front storage box to fit between trailer and propane tanks. 'Ron in BC' and 'Myron' have posted photos of the boxes they fabricated.

Not sure where the battery is placed on a 19 if you do not have the box. With box I think it goes inside the box? It may now go on the tongue behind the propane tanks? The location has changed over the years as I understand.

I believe ETI uses the same size box on all the trailers?
Box width on our 15A trailer is 74.5 inches. Someone with a 19' could comment on the width of their box for comparison.

Thank you JohnB

Good point ref. tongue weight, I guess this is balanced by how summary "onboard weight" is distributed to counter.

That was one of the motivations for me fabricating my own box. That and I'm a hopeless DIY'er and maybe cheap also

I don't think a typical truck box is very well shaped or proportioned for use on the front on an Escape, but many people have built or bought storage boxes for this purpose, on all brands of trailers. If you do a Google image search for "trailer tongue box" you'll see lots of examples.

Single-axle Escapes (13' 15', 17', original 5.0) are the classic 80" width,
the Escape 19' is 4" wider (84"), and
the Escape 21' and Escape 5.0TA are another 4" wider (88").

I would be interested in the ETI box widths, too.

Thanks guys, great input and appreciate the dimensions. Have been considering the truck-type storage box option, there seem to be many products of various sizes on the market. Potential Cons so far:
- Will need to contrast as unlikely to match
- Not yet clear on fixing options
- less costly than ETI option, but can still be pricey (a little cheap myself

Potential Pros:
- Choice of sizes and finished including white (though I quite fancy the diamond-plate Aluminum myself for the "expedition" look)
- Most lockable and very secure
- Less costly (that's me )

Will keep you posted.

For a rectangular truck box, I would add the risk of reducing turning clearance (possibly relevant only when backing up at extreme angles) between the box corners and the tug.

great point, hadn't thought about that... I guess level of risk would be based upon the width of the truck box inquestion. BTW I notice one or two of the manufacturers also make a tongue box spefically for this purpose (will post link later). Downside being much reduced volume.

Per Kim at ETI, the box on my 17B (pick it up in 2 weeks) is 12”w x 16”d (at the least) x 41” (narrowest point) - 47” (longest point).

That doesn't make sense based on the photos I've seen. The box extends all the way to the corners of the front of the trailer in the photos, completely covering up the vinyl protective corner covers. That'd make it about 8 feet across -- not less than 4 feet as these numbers suggest.

I just measured my box cover, it is 80" along the widest part, the rear and 48" along the narrowest part, the front closest to the propane tanks, I have a 21', not sure if that changes anything.

Don't have the 17B yet so can't verify, and I hastily copied and pasted from ETI's email, but a little common sense on my part would have caught the discrepancy! The 17 is 80" wide and the box seems to pretty much cover the front profile, so must have been a typo (77" perhaps?). Come to think of it, the other dimensions seem a little small as well, after looking at my latest build photos. Maybe Kim was quoting minimums, as all of the dimensions taper or otherwise vary across their distances.

Jim, what's the inside vertical dimension on the 21 box? Curious if our chairs will fit in there.

Whenever convenient. Won't care until the end of August!

There is another aspect if aesthetics are considered. The front of the trailer has very rounded corners. If the box width exceeds the point where the front starts to curve it looks like the box is "too big" for the front of the trailer.

That's why mine is 58" wide at the bottom rear. The top is smaller because the front of the trailer slopes outward and the rear of my box follows the contour of the trailer wall. (max. volume)

Anyway this is a 58" wide box for comparison.

Ron

On our 15 with the lid open it is 74 long at the back, 43 long at the front, 12 wide and 21 deep at the outside edges. I think theeasurements would be the same on a 17 but don't know about the bigger, wider units.

I think the box from ETI is the same for all models. At least, judging from the photos. You can tell that the 21 sticks out a little bit from the box on both sides, because it's a wider trailer. on the 17 and 15, it doesn't.
