Backsplash
Figured I would start a new thread rather than tangle up Laura's "The Trailer is home!" thread anymore than it has been, but she inspired me to finish my project. Had a few hours to knock out the backsplash today. The style used is called Milano Sasso. It's a dual finish type and is the one that (after many samples) we think looks the best with the stock Escape counter top (which is tough to complement well due to it's unique and varied pattern).
Smart Tiles 9.65 in. W x 11.55 in. H Milano Sasso Peel and Stick Decorative Wall Tile Mosaic in Beige (Box of 12)-SM1088-12 - The Home Depot
This isn't your mothers peel and stick. I tested a piece for a few weeks through a variation of temperatures and this stuff has an almost industrial stickiness, but can still be removed cleanly if needed. Takes some templating around the window, but all in all I think it came out pretty well. Lightweight, attractive, easy to clean and with your own labor done for about $100.

Looking at the picture it seems that the tiles go very well with the countertop. Congrats on a job well done. Very nice upgrade.

Hijacking my own thread, but I forgot to mention that while I was doing the backsplash I used the opportunity to test the mini split heat pump in heating mode since I needed the trailer warm for application. It was about 40F outside and the Fujitsu system easily kept the trailer comfortable at 70F. Runs just as quiet as a small electric heater. It was never intended as a primary heat source as it was really installed for the cooling function, but it will be interesting to see how it does heating the trailer as it gets colder.

Hey Dave, looks great!
yeah, that stuff sure is "fun" to use, huh? I got super excited when I was able to put up an entire sheet without any trimming! I think I did that twice. Party time!
I did find that a few would peel off a bit and I just stuck 'em back on with a small dab of super glue behind them. It wasn't all of 'em and it was just a few that I had to cut and add in to fill in a space.
Glad I could inspire you and maybe others will do the same as well!
And it sure is great to sit on the dinette, look over, admire them and know that you did it yourself! Yay for you!

Did you stick the peel and stick "tiles" directly over the vinyl wall covering? I've been worried this would give a less than solid back splash. But if it works for others I'll have to give it a try. Denise (my wife) has been wanting a back splash in our 19.
Thanks.

Yep, you stick it right on the vinyl wall. I got a vinyl (or as they call it "headliner") sample from ETI before I starting sticking that stuff inside the trailer. You can peel it off if you get it cockeyed. You can also push against the wall a bit so you can tuck bits underneath the trim so you have a cleaner edge. I didn't figure that out quite early enough, so went back in a few areas to fix it.
You still have give on the wall, so you're not creating a solid backsplash like if you were putting up a piece of formica, like I know a few folks have done in their trailers. The peel & stick stuff is very flexible, which is good when you want a bit of a curve when you put it around the window. And that flexibility helps when you need to tuck it behind the edge trim.

Another thing, Hugh. If you look real closely at the photo Dave (Rubicon) posted, you can see a slight curve to the tiles on the far left. I know it's there but it could be tricky for others to see. It looks like his wall has a bit of a curve there, just like mine and probably all of the Escape trailers - maybe from the vinyl; I don't know. But with some curves/puffiness (or whatever you want to call it) in the vinyl wall you want the Peel & Stick stuff to have some bend to it.
Dave - as I was looking at your photo again, I can see that you had a better time of it than I did at the bottom along the edge trim. Your pattern is straight, whereas mine has curves to it as the "tiles" aren't all straight lines. I like the shape on my tiles, but I was getting gaps between them and the edge trim, where I could see the slightly off-white vinyl wall, which, of course, drove me nuts and I had to fix. I ended up having to trim little bits and sticking them on and shoving a bit under the edge. What a complete PITA and took huge amounts of time to fix that. And my back was killing me from hunching over to fix it. Jeez!
So, that's something to take into consideration for anyone wanting to do this. Straight lines on your "tiles" will probably be much easier than the pattern I picked.
I also might have started off by flipping the first piece the wrong way as I wasn't aware that was going to happen. (If you look at a piece of this stuff, that might make sense. One edge was straight and the other had some gaps in it after I peeled it off the backing.)

For what it's worth, my buddy who owned a large design firm ( offices and restaurants and casinos ), said, when I mentioned peel and stick tiles, "they shrink". Not certain we are talking about exactly the same product, but, I say, good luck.

Hmmm, I quite like the look of that.
My trailer is older so different counters---I have a 17 B with the kitchen window--so not sure just how far I'd go over..
Our vinyl is a bit discoloured behind the stove, so this would be a nice cover up...And I could do it myself...

I don't think we are talking about the same product. I know some of the old, original peel and stick floor tiles used to shrink but these are made differently with a gel technology. At $100 for 12 they aren't exactly cheap. Not something I'm worried about, but like anything else...only time will tell.

Not necessarily. Older products may have with fairly dramatic temperature changes but products like these are improved constantly. If you really want to know for sure, contact the manufacturer's customer service department and ask them.

Yes, some patterns are definitely easier to work with than others. This pattern was very easy and lined up perfectly on the bottom using the counter top lip as the guide. Also where the tiles overlap you cannot tell at all. At the edges I actually pushed the tile slightly behind the wood divider on the right and the white trim piece on the left. This gave it a very clean look without having to worry about perfect cuts. It really does apply nicely to the vinyl and like Laura states it really needs to have the flexibility it has to allow it to conform to an imperfect wall. The hardest part is the templating around the window, but a trick I found is to use the paper backing off an already used tile. This can be lined up into the overlap grooves of the tile already on the wall and you can mark the cut and transfer it to the tile.
I believe the shrinkage thing is really a non-issue, but I can only speak for the Smart Tiles brand. There are cheaper ones out there that I didn't consider using partly because the look is not as realistic. The ones I used are made to last a long time under varying temperatures. There is even a section on their website dedicated to RV applications. Granted the vinyl is unique as a backing but it works well in my opinion.
