Backup Camera ?

Hello,

Our new 21' will be completed in late May 2014 (Yay!). Somewhere in this forum I saw a picture of a backup camera mounted along the rear top of a 19', I believe near the center, high rear running or brake light. I was hoping to take advantage of the wealth of knowledge and experience out there to help me decide if I should ask the good folks at Escape to install a backup camera like that on my 21'. If you have any helpful information, I would really appreciate hearing from you.
Questions:

- What kind of camera would you suggest (manufacturer and model, please!)?
- Is it possible to install this in a way that will allow me to move to a new tow vehicle and bring the camera monitor with me?
- What is the connection between camera and monitor and where is the connection located?

Thanks very much!

My overall impression from reading posts is that the camera is no substitute for having somebody guide you, or getting out and looking ( and using your rear view mirrors ).
On the road, I would still rely on mirrors. All it takes is a quick glance. With the camera, I think your eyes have to re-focus on the monitor, taking your eyes off the road.

We don't use ours for back up but it has been invaluable on the road especially in city traffic. We really used it going through the Salt Lake corridor. Looking at the monitor is no different than checking the rear view mirror.

In your experience, what is the advantage over mirrors?

We use one, not for backing up, but for seeing traffic behind us. The lens has a bit of a fish-eye effect so it eliminates blind spots on the sides and behind you. Using the camera in conjunction with the standard mirrors works very well for us.

Hi: Pam n Fletch San Jose Ca... Jon Vermilye bought a back up camera and sent it to Reace to be installed on his 17'er. Send him a personal message as he's on the road to the warm weather. He will answer but it takes some time. OH& BTW...WELCOME!!!Alf

In our motorhome (which is not a trailer but has similar rear vision issues on the road, and is the overall length as our van plus trailer) I occasionally use the backup camera on the highway to see the area immediately behind us, which is not visible in the mirrors. The camera is aimed down so it doesn't see very far back, and so there is rarely anyone in that space; however, it also gives a different perspective on traffic just behind us in the adjacent lanes, which helps with determining if we are safely past them for lane changes.

I have not towed with a rear-view camera yet.

Fletch - for our Jan 2014 hatch we had a wireless back up camera from Rearview Safety shipped up to Reace. We chose a monitor that hangs on the rear view mirror so that while driving when we reflexively look at the rear view mirror we will see an image of whatever is in the blind spot directly behind. I can't attest to how well this product will work but I found the customer service to be excellent. Will update after we pick up "Bon Oeuf" in April.

My back up camera system included two cameras, a 5" monitor, and the cabling to go between it all, including a flexible cable for attaching the trailer camera to the tow vehicle. All from Rear View Safety. They no longer have the 5" monitor which was the perfect size for my RAV4.

I've been using it for 2 1/2 years and am happy with the choice.

@ Karen - Thanks! Hard to think up "punny " names that are original. I lived in France as a youngster so it honors the second language of Canada and my childhood language!

For hitching up our volvo has a backup camera that has worked well for hooking up.

As for backing into a camp site we figure to use : Motorola MR350TPR
Also has weather and useful when the family wanders off in different directions

A lot of people brought FRS radios to the Pacific National Exhibition in Vancouver. A lot.
It was fun listening.
"Mom, where are you"?
"We're at the ferris wheel" ( along with 200 other people )
"Who are you"?
"Debbie"
"Huh"?
"We're on this channel".
"Mom, I have to pee".

Entertaining, if not very useful when you have hundreds of people using them in a small area, none understanding radio protocol.

I've got five of them, but I find it easiest to just get out of the RAV, have a look, and explain what I need from my helper.

I find it is easier to get out, have a look, and then just do it myself.

Me too! But, then again as a single traveler... if I don't do it by myself it doesn't get done.
