Bed Extension For 17B

We had Reace do a bed extension for us...Next summer of course will be the big test, but just trying it out in the back yard I think it will be excellent.
We always keep the large dinette up as a bed and have a 3" topper made for it.

I always sleep on the outside as I get up frequently through the night, so it means Doug has to crawl over me to get out of bed early in the morning.(and then I wake up)..Also, I do like a lot of shoulder room. With this we can just slide out the end of the bed to get up and not disturb the other.
It does mean sleeping on a bit of an angle, but neither Doug nor I are very tall. We used the back cushions from the front dinette, so it adds almost 2.5 feet to the "width" of the bed.. Also, is far enough away from the furnace that will be safe too... Once the sheets are on the cushions they don't move..

So now we have the equivalent of a king sized bed in our 17' trailer.

It fits in very snuggly along the rail where the other table sits and the legs at the front collapse easily.There is a "hasp" to join it to the other table--no chance of separation while in use...
It will be very easy to dismantle during the day as the extra piece does slide under the bed fine...the extra piece of foam topper will just go under the bed too if room, or in the back of the vehicle..
The bedding will hang down the front or tuck in somewhat.
I bought king sized sheets and have a king sized duvet cover with a queen sized duvet. This way there is room to "tuck" in the sides...

LOL @ Alf!!! But its wine and red doesn't need refridgeration!!!!! Beer is earlier in the day (after breakfast!!)

Yeah--you do have to scoot the cushions over to get stuff out of the fridge--BUT coffee can be made in the am (heck I take mine black) without the late sleeper getting up!!!

Neat solution. My wife reminded me just now that she had suggesting doing this some time ago and I had dismissed the idea as impractical. Your success means that the rest of us are going to be under a lot of pressure!

Great idea! What is that slide-out made of? What is the height after the legs are folded" Maybe a 4 legged one would be the answer to my need for more sleeping space if it can sit atop the small dinette (after made into a bed) and if stable with the legs at each corner.

Sandra--it is a nice piece of plywood...we might varathane it over the winter..but very smooth etc on the edges.
The height of it is exactly what the bed height would be....
Don't think that there would be room into the trailer for the other end of sleep that way. It would block off the bathroom door.... This way the only thing blocked in the night is the fridhe and th elower kitchen drawer....

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking of making something four legged and placing it on top of the small dinette parallel to the front. One thing I had done was to have the lower benches made 18" high because I am vertically challenged and I wanted to be able to see out of the front window while seated at the dinette, so any "folding" bunk will have to be a bit above or at the window height in order to enable a kid (or kids) to get underneath without getting claustrophobic.

How tall are the slide-out legs? How thick is the wood? I am looking for something stable but not too heavy.

Duh---NOW I finally get what you are asking to do..(I was sick last week and I will use that as an excuse!!)
The plywood is 3/4 inch and the leg looks like the same ones that is used on the larger dinette (bed) I presume Reace just cut it to size for where we want to use it...

I can see now what you want to do--make a bunk bed area in the front?? 4 legs-- 1 for each corner and it would just sit on the two benches.... Would it stay "up" all the time....And would it have another way of "securing" it--to the wall or wardrobe??
