We have the Kamenstein holder, mounted above the sink with stainless machine screws from the bottom and t-nuts on top. Plenty of support and the t-nuts don't interfere inside the cabinet.

Sounds clever

how did you know how long of a stainless machine screw to get?

wouldnt it need to be exactly the right length?

thanks.

Went out in daylight and double-checked what I actually did. The screws are 8-32 x 3/4" stainless steel truss machine screws threaded into 1/2" binder posts, not the t-nuts I tried originally. The screws are about 1/8" short of flush with the cabinet floor; hence the switch to the binder posts. They are available with a longer barrel than the typical t-nut, so there's plenty of thread for the slightly short screw, plus they are available with a closed base, which does require a slightly short screw but provides a cleaner look on the cabinet floor. Determined the required screw length by trial and error: fortunately, I'm only 10 minutes from a Lowe's. Structurally, this is certainly overkill, but I'm confident that the towel holder won't rip out of the cabinet floor as it conceivably could if just screwed into the rather thin cabinet floor material.

thanks Stan - super helpful for me, and anyone else who decides to mount this way.

And I thank you as well, Stan! That's something I have not installed yet, but I like the way you describe it!

My Lowes didn't have much in stock. So I had to go with 1/4 inch bolts (3/4 long) along with 1/4 x 7/16 T Nuts. I flattened the wings on the T nuts so they would lay flat, drilled out the holder to fit the larger diameter bolts, drilled holes in the upper cabinet, and it went it just fine.

That's one paper towel holder that isn't going anywhere.

My Kamenstein Modification

When I saw this thread I was very interested in the Kamenstein paper towel holder. I ordered the wall mount and counter top version. After reading that the finial could stick out to far. I decided to modify the counter top version to see if I could shorten it without losing the finial.

This is the end result and will work on wall mount model.

For some reason my wall mount did not have a finial nor a threaded rod inside, just a hollow tube. I cut mine short enough so that it is not visible.

For the 5.0 owners ...

I too purchased the Kamenstein after learning about its ratcheting feature. I've decided that since the insides of the cabinets are so tall in the 5.0, I'm going to mount it high inside the cabinet over the sink. The upper bulkhead above the stripper pole appears to be a solid piece of plywood. This will allow me to fashion a suitable, protruding arm adequate to attach the holder to. I plan on putting it high enough so I won't lose any storage and it'll be out of sight. Now, just to find the time ...

Interesting idea. But, now you'll need to open a cupboard (goopy hands) and the paper towels may be tucked back where they're hard to access. I seem to remember a good 5-7" between the "wall" just above the stripper pole and the opening to the cupboard when the door is open. Or am I envisioning this wrong?

5-7" from the wall is about right, Donna. But with that solid bulkhead it's no problem making a horizontal attachment point with adequate bracing that protrudes enough to hang the holder over the door. As for goopy hands, that's what tea towels are for.

Yuk, yuk...made me laugh. Tea towels indeed. I'm surprised anyone knows what those are in this day and age.

I, too, am one of those who prefers less clutter with the paper towels out of sight and, besides, my hands are merely wet from washing, not goopy!

I'm going to agree with Donna. When I need a paper towel, I want to be able to just grab one without opening anything. Because of where I mounted the Kamenstein, I can even reach for a towel from outside the trailer - or at least, standing on the step.

Call me strange, but I don't want paper towels hanging out in the open when I won't have need to use them. This is very much like the one we use, it stores inside the sink cabinet most of the time, and if needed we can mount it on the outside real easy too. Simple, yet effective.
