Cabinet hinge replacement

Has anyone replaced hinges on cabinets with something more substantial as that they might find on an Oliver? The hinges we had trouble with before were on the bath door but did not replace them. We have had a couple come out. Some owners have had them discolor or deteriorate.

During our build, I purchased black hinges and black cabinet door handles from Lee Valley and sent them to Escape, who kindly installed them on our 19' instead of the factory supplied hardware. Tammy let me know in advance how many were required and there was no charge (or credit) for the swap. The hinges were decent quality (they did come from Lee Valley), but I have no idea if they were any better than the stock hinges.

I replaced the bathroom door hinges with an exact fit that look a bit heavier that I picked up at a Home Depot. One interesting effect - they had a built in "spring" that closes them, but is easily removed.

There are a couple of less than ideal situations with the bathroom door hinges.

1. They're not really "door" hinges but are cabinet door hinges. You could say that the bathroom door is just like a big cabinet door but that's pushing it.

2. The second issue is that the door can't open 180* and when it's fully open any accidental push on it easily damages and distorts the hinges.

I don't like the look of the door and don't like the hinges. It's been my intention to replace both but I haven't gotten around to it.

At least one other Escape owner has replaced the hinges with ones that allow for a more open door but I can't recall who it was.

Well, get at it. Interested minds want to see your results.

There have been a few folks upgrade these "enveloping hinges", a couple because they were bending, and a few as a precaution. They come with differing laps and insets. Not sure what the lap is that Escape uses, but there is zero inset, the doors are flush on the cabinet surface.

Your best bet is to take one off when you go shopping to ensure you have the correct replacement.

The new units have 180 degree hinges, mine does.

I buy some hardware and tools from Rockler. They are a little more expensive than some hardware stores but they do have a large selection of specialty items, hinges included. They even have plans and hardware to build your own casket if you are so inclined. Loren

That black works really nicely because we have so many items in the trailer that are black such as the window frames and monitors. We also have the black edging as we used gray a lot. Of course, you have the oven and those beautiful counters, too.

Yes, the problem would be having holes and everything line up and fit on a replacement so good idea to take what you have.

I guess the hinges on Escapes have now been changed to something better than on the older units.

Cathy, a little black paint around the edge of your sink cover would make it disappear.....

I used Minwax ebony stain and poly finish - gives it that black oak look.

Haven't got my trailer yet (damn weather!) but I'd like to insert some type of opaque plastic panel in the door - make the door istself lighter and also make it lighter in the bathroom, as I didn't get the optional wnindow.

ETI is now using Richelieu BP139195 hinges. According to Reace the door opens less than 180° - NOT flat against the wall.

Home Depot Canada stocks the Richelieu hinges, but Home Depot USA does not. Home Depot USA does carry Liberty H01915C-SN-O. After looking at a picture Reace thinks they are the same thing.

I replaced the original hinges on my bathroom door with the Liberty ones. The new ones are much heavier and the door almost - but not quite - opens flat against the bathroom wall. I cut away the vinyl door/wall edging to allow the hinges to sit flat. The latch works perfectly with no adjustments. Trimming away the vinyl may not have been the best idea, it leaves some bare wood/edges showing. In hind sight, I think I should have installed the hinges over the edging, which might require adjusting the latch.

Logging in to my Richelieu account shows that the hinges Escape uses are $4.60 a pair, or $2.43 a pair for 100 or more. Not too cheap. Home Depot CA lists them at $4.98 a pair, though mistakingly advertises them as 5/8" overlay, whereas they are actually 1/2" overlay.

Those ones you mention from Home Depot USA definitely seem to be direct replacement if not the same thing.

Says it is a self-closing hinge. Is that what is wanted on the bathroom door for a hinge replacement? They're in stock at HD right by me and I might try them as the ones that are on there keep warping.

Not really self closing - the door is too large/heavy for that. They might keep the door from swinging wide open if the door is unlatched and the trailer is slightly low on the passenger side.
