The downsides of an unnecessarily high load range are a slightly harsher ride (even at the same inflation pressure as used with the Load Range D tire), a bit more tire weight, sliightly more heat buildup (when run at the same load and pressure), and higher cost.

There are no problems with using an inflation pressure lower than the maximum for the tire (which shouldn't be surprising, given that the vast majority of tires on cars and light trucks are run well under their maximum inflation pressure). The load capacity of an ST tire depends only on the size and inflation pressure - the LR-C and LR-D tire of the same size and same inflation pressure have the same load capacity.

Got the Goodyear Endurance ST205/75R15 tires at Discount Tire in San Antonio. Sam’s didn’t have them.

I think thats a safe choice. (Same one I made). I was secretly hoping you would upsize and report how the clearance between/above them worked out but only because I didn't want to be the one to try it first.

If it helps, one trailer was accidentally built with ST225/75R15 tires (only one one side!) and while that was an error to be corrected, there apparently wasn't a fit problem:
Different Tire Width on Escape 21

Also, the 5.0 had larger tires than ST205/75R15 (either ST215/75R15 or ST225/75R15, depending on who is remembering the size) as standard equipment - it was based on the 17' and doesn't likely have larger wheel wells.

Hi Fred and Alf
I gave $108 a tire for my Endurance plus mount and balance, new stems and Tax. I think it was $512 total. That was at the Goodyear store in Cedar Rapids. I take two over at a time. Drop them off and go get a 5 guys burger. Pick up tires and go home, Mount on trailer, get the other two and go back. Get a Dairy Queen while they mount and balance. Shoots the mid day which is my plan. I never pay for tire disposal as I know a lot of guys with utility trailers who are usually running bad skins and are glad to have my cast offs. I’ve done this with car and trailer tires for many years. Alf, if you’d pull down here we could get you some new tires and go to Cedar Ridge for supper and a shot.

LOL! Someone spooked me out of getting the ST 225 tires...besides, my spare tire was a Carlisle ST 205 load range D which was almost new, so, I kept it and did not buy another spare.

Will do. I followed Iowa Dave’s lead and set the air pressure to 62.
Tomorrow, I will re torque the lug nuts to 95 ft lbs from 100 ft lbs, which is what Discount Tire set them to.

Hi Fred,
Try that 62 psi and see how you like it. Today was the one day a year Iowa Dave’s wheel bearing and brake inspection shop was open. Made sure seals were not leaking, plenty of meat on the brake shoes, everything clean, spindle nuts down “tight” bearings and spindle greasy, inflation right and torqued to 95 after setting first round at 65 and then stepping up. I’ll check them when I get back home from the Pikes Peak Rally and after a quick trip to Indiana, head for Osoyoos. The Highlander is one year old this week and is at 27,000 miles. Engine hasn’t been cold except the four days I was snowed in out here and didn’t go anywhere.

Fred, Why did you replace your tires. Weren't they only about 2 1/2 years old? I was planning on running mine for 4 years before replacing.

Hi Richard!
Because I had 53,000 miles on them, I could see the top of Lincoln’s head, and we are headed to from San Antonio to Alaska.

p.s. Are you going to Osoyoos?

Dave, ya beat me. My Highlander was 1 y.o. on 4/19 and turned over 25,000 the next day.

Somebody (maybe you?) was mentioning the 8 gears. I do fine using the lower gears...do you use the higher ones?

I tow in 7 most of the time. If it’s hilly I tow in 6. I keep close track on the downhill grades I will encounter the next day and I downshift to 5,4,3 to hold the descent speed down. I use the Highlander brakes sparingly and have the trailer brakes controller set up so the trailer brakes do all the work they need to do for slowing the trailer. I very rarely have brakes that are hot on the tow vehicle which I like in case something happens and I really need them.
Works for me. I have the western and eastern mountain roads book. Keeps me aware of what the day will bring as far as up and down in the mountains.

We are on the east coast this year, so we won't make it.

BTW, we have almost two years, 35K miles on our Carlisle ST225/75R15 load range D tires. Had to replace one last fall after a flat near Land Between the Lakes in Kentucky. I initially went up a size to help level the trailer and the higher load range for the safety margin. Running 62-65 psi. Happy with the ride. No problem fitting the X-Chocks.
We’re in KY on the way to Osoyoos.
