Cheap/Easy Covering For Plywood
We found a very inexpensive way to cover the plywood for the bed and dinette benches - only $18 plus a few staples for the staple gun. We found this carpet at COSTCO - it's made of recycled plastic bottles, weighs about 3-4 lbs for a 6x9 roll, is super flexible and cuts like butter with a hot knife. What's not to like. Additionally it has deep ridges that may or may not promote a little air ciculation and will certainly help to keep cushions from sliding. Because it is so thin and flexible it was incredibly easy to staple down with an electric staple gun.

Very nice! I just finished doing Ron's Ikea slats under the bed but this would be nice under the dinette cushions. I removed and painted both sides of the plywood first. This solution would be a lot less work!

Arnie and Paula, definitely better air circulation with your method.

I meant it may have been nice to put the Costco carpet down under the slats instead of painting the plywood. But yes, not only do the slats provide air underneath, but the mattress is raised 3 inches so the curve of the trailer sides are wider. I have more gap around the edges of the mattress too.
I really like the clean look of what you did.

Nice work Dave. I've painted all my rough exposed plywood now except under the bed and dinette. I really like your application of the carpet in those place as it would keep cushion slide and wood splinters in check. I'm going to give this some serious thought, as the application would be easier as well. Do you think it would even be necessary to staple it?

Sealing the wood is a good idea - here in Baytown, the moisture will cause mold on any unprotected wood. I may spray all the raw wood with Bora-Care with Mold-Care, then seal with a polyurethane.
Dave, the carpet covering is genius - it looks great and covers up the knots. Were you able to cover everything with one roll or did it take two?

I agree, but wouldn't go with poly under the dinette cushions as it would be too slick and the cushions will slide off. Unless you topped it with something like this carpet.

After seeing Dave's, I have to put the carpet on. It just looks too nice to not do it.

Perhaps not necessary to staple it but it does help hold it in place when raising the hatches. As for one or two rolls - well that depends. Against the advice of Linda, I cut a piece out before I started the project in order to cover the steps for the dogs - seemed like such a tiny piece. Well, the result was that my project actually cost me $36 instead of $18 as my side bench pieces were 1 & 1/2 inches short and one had a notch out of it. Fortunately I had figured it might take two rolls so I already had the second one on hand. Don't take care of the dogs first and one should do - at least it will with the u shaped dinette.

Folks:
For anyone interested in covering the plywood under the seat cushions (or permanent bed), as per Dave's suggested mod, I recently found this carpet at my local (Sandy, UT) Costco. I was not able to locate it on Costco.com, but it was available in the Sandy store (in the seasonal aisle near the shade canopies). The price had gone up to $19.99 for the 6 x 9 foot rug. The manufacturer is Foss and the item number (beige color) is 962832. As Dave indicated, it was easy to cut and staple (we used regular scissors and a staple gun). Easy mod!

I liked this mod too but for those who live in a higher humidity or areas with wide temperature swings .... get stainless steel staples. Otherwise the staples will rust stain your sheets or mattress. After a while, since staples are so thin, they can rust through and leave very sharp "tips" that would be dangerous for hands making the bed.
Stainless staples likely would be available from many large lumber yards, Jamestown Distributors - Newport, RI., Amazon, Defender Industries, etc. Jamestown and Defender are .com and do mail orders.
Rust and humidity never sleeps .....
Hope this helps,
Tom
