Colored Eggs (Different Gelcoats)

Too late for me unless I got a new Escape, but I want to ask why ETI does not offer several different color options for gelcoats. Would there be setup and change over issues changing from one color to another? Like every plane Boeing makes almost each Escape made is unique due to the many options available so why not offer different colors?

The reason I ask is b/c with the backup camera on my new Silverado I am "blinded by the white" when I put it in reverse at night with the trailer connected. I have to throw a towel over the nav screen to cut the glare so I can see to back up. Got a software update applied from GM that I guess dims the camera at night. Have not tested it yet.

Where I live a color like "Glacial Silt" would be perfect to make the trailer look good when it was dirty.

I don't know of any RV manufacturer who currently offers a choice of gelcoat colours. Colour choices are common in paint, but not gelcoat.

I can only guess that change-over issues are a major reason. Also, trailers can be shifted between buyers even after the shell is moulded, since options and customizations don't change the shell; different colours would prevent that.

Could be the effort and time it takes to thoroughly clean the equipment to spray a different color. If the trailer just before yours was red and even a small amount of red gelcoat was missed, you could end up with a very light pink trailer. That extra effort would drive up the production cost. OR, ETI could buy different equipment for the different colors... how many colors, how much equipment? There was a reason Henry Ford said: “any color so long as it is black”

The Happier Camper has color variations but from what I can see the price mark-up is also higher.. (vs Escape trailer)..

Imagine the customer who chose the color from a computer monitor and refused to accept the trailer, because it didn't look like the colour that his eye perceived.

Thanks for a huge laugh for the day. But sad, too, because I know exactly what color that is.

The first couple of Oliver 17' trailers were painted, I think they were red or black

Trillium Outback here in Calgary does different colours of gelcoat, and is the only one I know that does it. They also produce one 13' trailer every few weeks.

The main reason Escape won't is pretty much as Donna described, it is just too much work in time and expense to risk doing it. I imagine that even if a customer was willing to pay for this expense, that Escape would not be willing to give up the time in production that it would take, messing with their schedule.

Interesting

Even Team Trillium apparently isn't very interested in changing colours, since there's no mention of this possibility (that I could find) in the their website, even on the Build Your Own or Layouts | Features | Customizations pages.

Thanks for all your inputs. I was just wondering since I know nothing about fiberglass construction techniques.

Brian, your comment about shifting is right on. I would think ETI would want a very large deposit for a custom color.

I was just trying to think outside the "egg" with custom colors.
I know Toyota offers love/hate colors only in their TRD PRO line of trucks/suvs. Those that have to have a certain color get to pay MSRP and above for those limited production vehicles.

Imagine a two tone blue Escape or black bottomed, white topped penguin Escape. The possibilities are almost unlimited along with unbounded production nightmares.

Each custom colored trailer would come with a white door.

Rob, most of us make up for the lack of a custom paint job by getting custom color decals. It's a no-cost option and you have a bunch of colors to choose from. Don't like any of those, NO decals is also a no-cost option. Your local sign shop can create nearly anything your heart desires, which would make your trailer uniquely your own.

Thanks, Donna,

We chose our blue color from that chart then ETI got their graphics designer to custom make our trailer name. A nice service provided by the ETI crew.

I asked too in 2008, and they said those were a one off promotional thing, and they would only do white. This included the interior gelcoat colour which we both did not care for. After spending a bunch of time in the hospital when getting cured of leukemia, I got pretty tired of institutional white. I much prefer warm and cheery. Others do like it, and that is just fine.

If Escape would agree to different exterior colours, I would have been all over it. Maybe a deep burnt orange.
