Re: Creating more problems / installing weather instruments

Taking pix is my job ( at least until Canwest / Global declares bankruptcy ).

Anyway, looking at the pic, I figure I should have got the instruments with the stainless steel bezel to better match the hardware.

You can see these at www.leevalley.com

I got my TV mount there too ( $60 ). It weighs a bit....

Lee Valley Tools is a great resource and the on-line catalog is better than Playboy as a diversion. Useless in the outhouse though, however they will send you a hard copy upon request.

Re: Creating more problems / installing weather instruments

Thanks Glenn

I used to live in Cloverdale, and made frequent trips to Lee Valley,
my only saving grace was my wife liked their gardening section...

Re: Creating more problems / installing weather instruments

I'm still pondering. Pic shows where I would really like to mount the instruments. Placing them in the cupboard door subjects them to being jarred. I'd glue a piece of common 1x4 inside the cupboard and then drill through the face and backing board.

Alternative is to mount them in a piece of oak 1 x 4 and mount that piece above the cupboard door ( see previous pix ).

On the counter is the Sirius satellite radio in the Executive Dock. I comes with a wall mount as well as the stand.

Re: Creating more problems / installing weather instruments

The placement looks good. Have you thought of mounting them on a board, then hanging the board in that location on a reinforced hook, like a picture? That way, it could be wrapped up, and cushioned while traveling. (Like whatever you do to protect the radio). Or does that idea just make it one more thing to set up after arrival?

Re: Creating more problems / installing weather instruments

I've got a piece of 1 x 4 red oak ( two feet long for $9 ). Might make sense to drill that and hang them on that from the cupboard above the wardrobe.
Drilling into the cupboard, as I would have to do here, scares the heck out of me. Make a mistake and it's a big mistake, but I like the look.

Hi:gbaglo... What happens if you mount them to the board then mount the board to the screen door frame over the door...as an extension of the oak cupboards in the white space

Re: Creating more problems / installing weather instruments

What about just getting a piece of metal (1/8 in thick by 1' wide with holes in it..they have them at every hardware store ) drill 3 holes in the cabinet mount the unit(s) with small nut & bolt to the metal backing inside the cabinet. The metal strap should add strength to the whole thing..

Re: Creating more problems / installing weather instruments

These are held in place by friction. They have a plastic, ribbed ring around them. That's why I would need a piece of backing board because the cabinet material is too thin to adequately hold them. The instructions call for using a forstner type saw bit in a drill press, which I obviously can't do. Drilling into the cabinet really scares me. Slightest mistake and you've got to take the whole cabinet apart or do a cover-up. Given the tools I have and my skills, I figure I can screw up anything.

Re: Creating more problems / installing weather instruments

Another idea! Since the cupboard door is real wood, would velcro with adhesive on the wood side and the back side of each piece if virtually covering the back surfaces (and concomitant area on the wood) be sufficient to mount them (at least when not traveling)? Then they can be wrapped and tucked away in the cupboard when not in use. That way, at least if it didn't work out, you have no holes, and no "paper" removal; just perhaps a bit of Minwax touch-up if the varnish or finish comes off.

Re: Creating more problems / installing weather instruments

My buddy Keath came over this afternoon and we explored the alternatives.

I've settled on mounting the instruments in a piece of 1x4 oak. The board will be 9 1/4 inches wide, which is the minimum to fit the guages. I can then mount it with double sided tape just about anywhere I choose. I'll probably mount it as shown in the last pic, but I could mount it on the wall covering too. Heck, it could go vertical.

To keep the mistakes down to a manageable level, my daughter's boy friend is cutting the board to size and will router the edges. Then, I'll take it to a wood-working shop and he will drill the holes.

After that, the project is entirely in my hands....

I have experience with Mac-Tac going back more than 30 years, so I think I can handle this.

Re: Creating more problems / installing weather instruments

Is that good 2-sided tape? Is there a concern that the tape will hold and not cause a problem to a less than wooden surface? Is Mac Tac generally available?

Re: Creating more problems / installing weather instruments

The reference to Mac-Tac was my attempt at humour. It was ( or maybe is ) used as cupboard liner or a cheap surface cover. It didn't stick very well and left residue, like me.

There are various grades of double sided adhesive pads, but I don't know how much is marketing and how much is truth. I've seen stuff labeled as industrial. Not sure what that means, but the assumption is that it is better, so it costs more.

I would feel pretty confident with 3M products. The hooks I bought surely stuck and when I wanted to remove them, and followed the directions, they came off without any damage to the surface. The first time I took one off, I didn't have the directions and damaged the surface.

Make sure you save the package so you have the instructions for removal.

Re: Creating more problems / installing weather instruments

What I learned today.

Apparently I would not compromise structure by drilling holes in the cabinet above the wardrobe ( the material is 1/8" oak). It's the cabinets above the sink in the 17B where it could create a problem. And, that would seem to solve the issue, but still thinking...I'm going to proceed with placing the instruments in 1 x 4 piece of oak and mount that.
My reasoning is that should an instrument fail, would I be able to get a matching replacement? One that fits in a 2 1/2 inch hole? And my experience with brass finishes is that they become tarnished or pitted over time. I don't want to have to deal with permanent holes in the cabinet at some later date.

If I was starting over, I'd first visit a few marine supply stores and see what I could get off the shelf. More costly to be sure.

A smooth sea never made a skilled mariner.

Re: Creating more problems / installing weather instruments

Asking me to swim is like asking a dolphin to run a marathon.

Daughter's boy-toy just brought the mount for the instruments, after he cut it to size, routed it and sanded it down with 600 grit paper. As she said, "he's a perfectionist". While we were admiring it, the damn beagle was gobbling his dinner which he'd momentarily left unattended.

I'm hoping tomorrow to get the mount to the wood shop so the holes can be drilled, assuming that work doesn't get in the way of my chores.

Of course, I'll post pictures as soon as it's done. As long as work doesn't get in the way.

Yup, but the hygrometer is useful for monitoring moisture in the trailer over the winter. Temp guage will help with setting the thermostat. Not sure how helpful a barometer is. Nothing you can do about the weather.

Re: Creating more problems / installing weather instruments

Holes drilled. I'm just sticking it up with tape in different locations to see where I want it.

In the pic it doesn't look centred in the panel because of the camera angle, but it is.

I was advised to stain it a different color, but I kinda like it the way it is, with a couple coats of satin varathane. I think having the grain running at 90 degrees is enough separation.
