Well then you haven't seen mine Donna Since it can be kept neatly coiled up with velcro straps on holding it coiled, only as much as is needed is used and the rest hangs on the end of the bumper. No mud on my unused cord either.

I don't think I have every wiped down my cord, and it is still nice and clean a few years later. Not sure where you guys all camp that there is mud about.

Is the detachable cord a male twist lock that plugs into the trailer or a female?

The cord end is female. Having prongs sticking out that were energized would be a potential shock hazard.

Having a removable cord also allows the use of a regular cord when only smaller amounts of power are required, like for storage.
