Fridge Size

Received a question about having the larger 5.0 cu. ft. fridge installed in the 17B, so I figured I'd answer it here.

The larger fridge takes up space that would be devoted to a micro-wave. We rarely use our micro-wave at home so, for us, that was no loss. Instead of a micro-wave, we get an additional cupboard above the fridge that is quite handy.

The 5.0 cu. ft. fridge only runs on AC and gas, but, it seems being able to run on DC isn't much of a bonus the way it sucks the battery dry.

Re: Fridge Size

the larger frig is a GREAT asset if you are going to be out more than a weekend. We had the size smaller in our Casita and it was tight! Well worth the effort if you can do without the micro. If you can't, then move up to a 19' or a 5.0 and get both!

Re: Fridge Size

Hi: All... First thing my wife said when we looked at the 5.0 was "It's got a real fridge". Two years camping with a Boler 1.9 cu. ft. fridge and two coolers was enough!!! You had to unload the coolers before there was enough room to set foot in the trailer. Alf.

Nice. Did you put one of those "dot-it" lights in that cupboard? How is that hook on the side working out?

Re: Fridge Size

Does anybody have a solution to the fact that there is no light in this model of fridge? It is really only a problem when it is dark outside for the most part. I was thinking of getting some kind of tiny switchable LED light and adhere that inside.

The idea is to preclude "midnight raids".

That is a negative about the frig. Maybe an LED will stick to the inside. Should solve the problem without any big hassle. I'll try it. Guess I'll have to turn it off, and make sure the surface is room temp and dry first.

Re: Fridge Size

I just called the factory to see if we could upgrade to the larger fridge, since we don't plan on having a microwave. Too late. The cabinetry is already installed.

Sigh. At least we can run on battery while driving.

Re: Fridge Size

With the larger fridge only running on AC or propane, do people leave it off while driving? Or run it on propane while driving? Legal in the US but I think it's illegal in Canada.

Re: Fridge Size

Especially when it is hot out, I run with the propane on. The only place I have ever heard of it not allowed, is on the BC Ferries, but I have not pulled a trailer much outside Western Canada, and the NW US.

Don't despair, you'd be surprised at how much the smaller one holds. You could also get one of those portable 12 volt ones, (with a 12 volt outlet) or perhaps a "dorm cube" (if it isn't too heavy). I'm sure the cupboard will come in handy for storage.

Re: Fridge Size

We were going to get a bigger fridge too, but when Lisa saw the storage potential in the cupboard above the fridge, she changed 'our' minds.

You can get portables that run on propane too, which are great for boondocking where ice for coolers is not too handy.

I don't have the dot.it light in there normally. It's in another cupboard, across from the shower at the front. I just put it there for the picture. The 3M Command hooks are working very well. Other double sided adhesives and Velcro have not worked very well at all. The 3M hooks come in white plastic for under $4 and they have a brushed aluminum for about $14.

The standard fridge in the 17 is a 3.5 cu. ft. three-way. I opted for the 5 cu. ft that is standard in the 5.0 and the 19.

I was contemplating putting a 6 cf unit in. I did find one (and only one) that would fit through the door. In the end though, we opted out. One of our main reasons was to get a larger separate freezer compartment, as we raw feed our dog. For a 17 dayk trip, we did manage to get some of our stuff and at least 12 days worth of his food in the freezer of the 5 cf model. If we really need more, we plan to get a 3-way cooler.
