Generator on the tongue?

Can't find any posts about it, so here goes. I'm configuring a 21 without the giant 14 inch wide storage box up front, and considering putting my Honda 2000i between the dual tanks and the front glass. Since the box is rated at 100 lbs capacity and the generator weighs a lot less, seems like a good fit. Anyone done this? Generator runs on propane, I usually haul it in the truck anyway.

The Honda 2000I is marginal to supply power to the Dometic AC.

I have been caring a 2000w Champion on the hitch on my 19 for 4 years now, it works great even helps keep hitch weight proper.

Yup, already sent Jim at Orbital Machine Works an email for dimensions, but you beat him to it. OMW does primarily Casita stuff (since some of the guys own them) but this design is well constructed.

Ernie
Any idea what model (or size) Dometic air conditioner ships with a 21 these days? I'd like to look up the specs.

I believe it's the same 11000 btu that is used in the 19 , our 19 has the soft start and our Honda 2000 runs it just fine

Thanks Dave. our Casita had an 11,200 Coleman without the soft start cap and the Honda still ran it without problems.

If your generator will run but not start your AC there is a solution out there. I've been reading some interesting stuff lately about "boosting" inverter/chargers. Basically, anytime the current supplied by a hookup or generator is not enough, they can make up the difference from the battery. For example, if you are getting 15 amps from a household type plug at a friends house and need 18 amps they will pull 3 amps from the batteries to supplement. That will let you carry a smaller generator or stay with friends without blowing fuses in their house. It might not be an "all day" solution due to the drain on the batteries but it would be ideal for something like starting an AC.

The Victron Multiplus and MasterVolt Mass Combi have been around for some time and Magnum has just come out with the MagnaSine Hybrid. They are expensive but if you can buy and carry a smaller generator you would save money in the long run, especially when ongoing fuel costs are included. I'm certainly looking seriously at getting one when I get my Escape.

At $2500 for the Magna Sine, I'd rather buy a smaller air conditioner my Honda could start!

Our 19 is a 2012 , not quite sure when Eti started using the ac units with soft start but I suspect upgrading a unit with out it would not be that hard

I talked to Tammy yesterday and she said the Honda 2000i would run the AC in the 19er. I suspect it's the same with the 21er. She mentioned the soft start being the reason.

On Coleman units all it amounts to is removing the top cover and replacing the starting capacitor with a different value. Probably the same - there are two caps - "start cap" and "run cap" on AC motors.
