Lockable compartments

First let me thank everyone with your answers and suggestions. On the 5.0TA looking at the pictures, I see five compartments that may have locking latches. Is that correct and does anyone know if the RVLOCK latches are compatible with the Escape compartment doors? I'm ordering the RVLOCK for the entry door and would like to use the same key to access these compartments.

Thanks jn

On mine the big lower front hatch is the propane and has no locks, the other 4 do. 1 of the 4 being the "optional" passenger side dinette hatch.

jn: I don't specifically know if these will fit the Escape access hatches, but many reviews suggest that these are problematic for users of different trailers due to them only being available in one size shaft length. I would bet that a call to Dave at Escape would be beneficial as he should be able to tell you what size shaft they use. Then you can compare that to the 1.125" shaft available from RVLock.

Having a super secure lock will only encourage a thief to destroy the compartment door to gain access.
Here is a picture of my lockable fresh water door. Easily distorted.

Thanks I've got the optional hatch on the build. I had forgotten the propane hatches usually aren't locked jn

I'm actually less concerned with door security than the number of keys I have to carry. The RVLOCK compartment latches can be keyed the same as the entry lock. Thanks jn

Not to worry about keys, as the keys to you hatches are "universal" in that anyone else in the cg has the identical key. Just your door lock is specific.

Odds are that your compartment keys are all CH751.
You get two keys for each lock, so you'll have eight keys for four locks. I keep extras in tow vehicle glove box, on other key rings, etc.

Seriously, I like those slam self locking hatches they are putting on some campers. They have a magnetic holder to keep open and when you shut, the hatch is latched and closed. They still need to be locked but if closed they will not open while on the road, unlike the standard locks that need to be locked to be latched.

Not just "usually" - I don't think a lockable propane compartment door would meet RVIA or CSA safety standards. The tank valves need to be accessible so that they can be shut off in an emergency.

We installed the RVLock V4.0 and the keyed alike hatch lock on our Escape a couple months ago. The RVLock itself was super easy to install. However, the hatch lock and thumb latch did not fit "out of the box" as the cylinders were too long. The RVLock website states the "threaded shaft dimensions are .75" wide x 1.125" long" and they "fit most doors up to a 1" thick slab." I have attached a picture below of the thumb latch (same dimensions as the lock) against our hatch door. As you can see the cam is too far out to securely lock the door. To solve this problem, we bought longer cams and bent them, creating an offset that made up the difference. We found that Richelieu cams fit perfectly on the RVLock. The only down side is we had to purchase complete lock sets from Home Depot for approx. $10 each to get the cams we wanted. We only needed two, so $20 was a good enough solution. If you are doing more, I'm sure you can find a hardware store to buy just the offset cams.
