Non-yellowing outside range vent replacement

Casita started using the JR vent cover on 2013 models. I just sold my 2013 Casita last week and the range vent looked like new when sold. They are a little cheaper when bought from Casita.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...0?ie=UTF8&th=1

If I were ordering a new Escape I would try to have one of the JR vents installed vs. the Ventline yellowing range vent. I just installed a white one on a 21 Escape. When I was sealing the new vent I wished I had ordered a black vent to match the windows, entrance lights and body trim strip.

Installation: The screw holes of the new vent pretty much match up to the old vent. Escape had really sealed the old vent in place, it took a while to remove the old vent. One #8 screw was stripped out but with all the sealant it did not matter. I replaced the stripped screw with a #10 screw. The vent hole needed to be enlarged. The top of the hole was OK in relation to the screws. Each end had to be trimmed about 1/8" and the bottom need to be trimmed about 1/4". To trim the small amounts a multi-tool did the job. Besides sealing the vent in place the hood also has to be sealed.

I wonder if they are still using the ones that go brittle and yellow.
If they are I may spray ours with some UV resistant Fusion white then clear. Same with the other vents.

That looks like a nice upgrade. Seeing how cheap the Ventline range hood vents are (under $10 on etrailer) it almost needs to be considered a maintenance item. Terrible quality for a nice trailer. How does the stock fan do pushing open the flap on the Endura? It looks a bit heavier than the thin plastic on the Ventline vent and I know some users have had trouble with the weak fan being able to lift the flap.

Catches

The catches add a little weight but the flap raises about 1/2" with the hood fan. With the Maxx Air fan on and the trailer shut up it also opens it up about 1/2". With the outside hood on, it is limited to opening only about 3/4".

New Escape

I was looking at the pictures of a newly built E-21. It looks like these vent covers are being installed on new trailers.

I have a 2017 21' and it has the Ventline. When it yellows ( as it will), then it will get replaced with a JR.

Hi Eddie

My Ventline is yellow and brittle, so I have bought and painted a new Ventline to replace it. Your replacement looks really good, but I thought I would stick with a direct replacement. I wasn't expecting the old vent to be glued down so tightly, I thought it would come off easily once the screws and exterior caulking were removed. Were you able to remove it without damaging the gelcoat? I am afraid to try to pry off the old vent with anything sharp.

Thanks for any removal tips you can pass along.

I had the same problem removing a bad porch light . They love Proflex or something like it to attach things . Go get plastic putty knifes to get behind the fixture . You should be fine Just be careful . I cleaned up the residue with alcohol. No damage . Did the same removing a 9 in vent to put in bath fan . Pat

I was able to get it off with out messing up the gelcoat. One other note the hood snaps on the flapper assy. after it is installed and sealed. The hood also has to be sealed to the shell.

Escape used ProFlex on mine, but Sikaflex is a quality caulk that will work fine as well. Second the idea of the plastic putty knife. Was able to remove the vent without any damage.

Did you change out your vent with the one in the SAM-1 kit?

Yes, I did Jim. Mainly because I liked the look of it better, and because it's made of a UV stable plastic that won't yellow like the stock one. But, either vent will work of course with the SAM-1 conversion. You do have to cut about an inch off the flange, due to the thin walls on the trailer - just as Escape did with the stock one. I also used the self sealing gasket that came with it, which meant no need for caulk. The biggest challenge was getting all the old caulk off the trailer. They used a bunch of it.

I'm not sure Pat. I've heard it doesn't yellow as much as the stock one, and the plastic does appear to be more stout.
