Not necessarily. There is chrome plating and then there is chrome plating. The OEM hinges probably did not get the best quality plating job from their factory. There's no reason that chrome can't go many years without pitting or noticable corrosion - provided the surface is prepped properly, and the plating is done right.

Robert I think it is the whole hinge which is cheap pot metal . Sure if the hinge was better metal rechroming would for sure be the way to go . The whole hinge is pretty cheap . I will have to look in my files I think I found some stainless hinges that I was thinking to get before I came across Western Hardware . Pat

The hinges on my 2008 17 B have worn out the washers at the bottom of the vertical rod. (Or whatever that is called). I was trying to find a metal washer, that I could slide in, but have been unable to do so. I am thinking about trying a hard rubber washer, or a hard nylon one, where I can cut it, and force it around the cylindrical part. This needs to be done on both hinges.
Because they are worn, the door has slid down slightly, so that I cannot lock it from the inside. In order to do that, I now have to lock it from the outside, with the door open and then go inside and pull the door closed. I don’t want to have to replace them if at all possible... I don’t know if those hinges currently sold by Escape would fit my curved door.
I wonder if anyone has encountered this particular problem. Otherwise the hinges look great, and it took me a while to figure out what was happening with the door.I wonder if anyone has encountered this particular problem. Went through my files and I must of thrown all that away . But I do have picture and drawing of the size needed for our trailer from Western Hardware .Only hole off a little which is very easy fix I can tell you how to do is the one front hole . Pat

First off you can buy the stock pot metal hinges from Escape, secondly I believe that one or the forum members used the hinges from Etrailer and they said they were a little stiff at first but they worked fine after a little while. I can look at my messages to see who it was

Sandra do you know if you have the stainless hinges or the cheap pot metal ones ? Reason I ask is because Escape had Western Hardware make those hinges at first but not sure when or for how long they were buying them .If the Stainless ,yours would be the ones I would want to keep . I had purchased a new set from Escape before I found the stainless because I could see that were not lasting . I gave them away to forum member just for shipping even though I paid over 60 USD to Escape .my stainless were less then 32.00 a set . Pat

Mine are real shiny and they look brand new...no bubbles or rust..look like chromed?

Hi Sandra sounds to me with the year of your trailer you have the stainless hinges . I think I would bet on it ! If it was what we had no matter what you did they degraded and corroded in 6 mo -9 mo. They were not shiney anymore or looked nice . So definetly would keep and fix yours ! Pat

Resurrecting an old thread to help others in search of SS door hinges for Gen1 trailers.
The hinge that was posted by oldtimer from etrailer earlier in this thread should fit and comes in polished stainless steel.

If the stamping on the etrailer ones is correct they are actually not Polar but are made by Sierra Pacific Engineering and Products and are model 1001SS. They look to be as close to the Escape originals as you are going to find in polished stainless. You can use the SPEP page for detailed dimensions
