Rear Bumper Guard

My trailer seems to want to throw up dirt and gravel which then hits the front side of my bumper and chips off the black paint (passenger and drive side both). Surprised that the mudflaps don't do a better job. It was starting to look all rusty and nasty, so spent part of the morning sanding and painting the affected parts of the bumper.

Anyone have a source for a bumper "protector" of sorts? I'm thinking of a black vinyl-like sheet material that can be cut. Sticky on one side and sand-paper-like on the other. You would cut it to fit the front of the bumper where the rocks are hitting.

I've had decent luck using Por15 and a couple coats of their topcoat on all forward facing frame parts. They still get nicked a bit but much less then before. On mine the step gets it bad.

Do both of you have mud flaps on your tow vehicles also? They seem to keep damage to a minimum...

Hummm, how about black Plasti Dip. It can be applied with a brush. OR tape off a bunch and use the spray... multiple coats.

Professionally applied spray-on truck bed-liner like Rhinoliner or Line-x will definitely work. However, the cost for such a small job could be prohibitive. I tried a do-it-yourself product from Amazon called Raptor but it chips too, though not nearly as bad as paint. I have since reapplied a coating of another similar product called Herculiner and it looks more promising. However, I have not taken my trailer out since so I am not really sure if it’s any more chip resistant. In any case, it is pretty easy to recoat if needed.

I would use rubberized undercoating. Mask off and spray it on.

Forgot to mention that I also tried some of the “roll-on” Flex Seal (not the spray- on product. It’s too thin) on my prior trailer. That’s the stuff that is advertised on tv. It did seem to work but it stays pretty soft and larger stones will still gouge the surface. I was also concerned that it might eventually peel off. However like most other products it could be recoated with some effort on a small inconspicuous area like the back side of a bumper. Larger visible areas, not so much.

On my 5.0ta, the frame along the front of the trailer is also subject to this problem and it’s pretty visible there.

I find Flex Seal every where now Lowe’s , Home Depot , Do it Center , Costco . So far only used on our spray foam after a valve mod and really liked it . Ours dried hard not soft . Haven’t tried the spray yet but It has many uses . Everything eventually needs attention and maintenance . Pat

Too bad Escape doesn’t offer a galvanized or aluminum frame as an option. Or at least a chip and rust proof coating for their trailer frames.

Yes, Weathertech. I imagine they help, but they certainly do not eliminate it. Could go wild with a set of these, but I'm not.
