Shelves for the closet on 2017 21' Escape

We saw this mod in Craig (2yax2go) and Josie's 21' Escape and have installed it in our rig. It adds 32.4 lbs to your trailer but we love them.

We full-time, so I carry only basic tools. I used 1" x 2" hemlock from Lowe's but you can use any wood you choose.

Using a 2" x 2" would give you a wider surface to insert your screws.

The box comes with two large U-shaped brackets, but I discarded them.

Thanks to Craig Vail and Josie Ingle-Vail for your idea and technical support!

Looks good!

So, you still plan to hang clothes since the rod is still there? Must be awfully short clothes. I thought you were taller than that.

LOL! No, I was gonna pull the closet rod out, but Dora said it was not in her way. May pull it out later. I do wear a size 36 "short" [emoji52]

Looks good red dog Here is another version of the same thing on my 21'

I built a box of 5/8" plywood with runners cut into the sides to act as drawer slides. The stainless steel drawers/baskets from the container store go almost full depth and there is about 6" of room to hang a few items.

What a great documentation of this modification! It will be very useful to those planning to do the same thing.

How did you get the clothes rod through your "box" ? Is there a slot opening at the back?

The clothes rod is very short and is attached to the box; it doesn't go through it. If you enlarge the picture, you can just see (barely) the rod holder on the outside wall of the box.

The photo is not a good close up.
KarenH is right the closet rod attaches to the side of the Drawer box that hold the baskets. So you can only hang jackets in the 6" space next to the box that goes full height. The other side is 4 baskets that slide in and out or can be removed completely. Which I sometimes do because the baskets are pretty deep and when filled, you need to dig sometimes.

Thanks for the really nice write up. I'm looking at installing drawers as well and am debating wire vs deeper wood drawers.

craiginpetaluma:

I like your storage solution because it seems like it'd be cheaper that the Rev-A-Shelf. Am unable to find the Elfa basket online. You wouldn't happen to know the model number of your baskets?

Thanks!!

I don't have a model number but the sticker on the baskets says
elfa
Narrow
2- Runner Drawer
12-7/8" x 20-3/4" x 7-1/4 h

I bought them at the container store about a year ago, I don't remember the exact price but around $15 and I was thrilled how the dementions fit the closet space so well.

Here's another option - no hanging of clothes though! We found that the Elfa Medium kit fits perfectly with a 1 x 2 used to anchor it to the stud on the refrigerator wall. Container Store has all of their Elfa brand stuff on sale for 30% off until Feb 28. A 1/2 to 3/4 PVC plug fits on the "feet" of the shelf kit to better distribute the weight from the semi pointed tips. For a real pro looking job it's hard to beat Fred and Dora's though - I've seen it in person and it's a work of art! Good job Fred!

Great job Dave and Linda. The mesh design of the baskets will keep everything tucked inside nice and tidy!
