Small Safe

Hey,

Has anyone installed a small safe in their trailer? If so what type biometric, dial, key ? To add to that anyone who has one have you gone across the border with it? Did they give you a hard time? It is a passing thought to have some place to put documents, money etc.

As is said on Facebook "following." I have a safe in my Scamp. Not for $$ so much as "stuff" I don't feel comfortable leaving in camp while I'm gone. And, it's hidden...

I've already scoped out Ten Forward to see where I want a safe to go, maybe...

Following...

How heavy is it? I would think people would just walk off with a safe but, of course, they have to find it first. And.... If you have a motion detector by the door....

Okay... this is reminding me. SOMEONE on the Escape Forum put a safe in the rear dinette (passengers side)... I remember a sliding door... give me some time, I'll find it... unless the OP posts...

No, but it sounds like a perfect opportunity to restart the trailer theft thread, only this time they get the safe too.

When I go camping, the trailer is the only thing of real value. My Fender guitar I have had for over 30 years has good emotional value, but everything else is just stuff.

I install lots of safes in peoples homes, and I sure would not want the weight of even the smallest of these in my trailer. I am curious to see what people would use in a trailer.

I assume that we're talking about a small box, the size of a car's glove compartment - a few kilograms at the most. If it is fastened to the trailer with screws or bolts which are only accessible through the interior of the box, no one will easily walk away with it.

I have not put one in, but we have considered it.

That would make more sense than a safe. I was picturing something weighing at least 30 pounds.

We've had them in Cruise America units and in our N.Z. Sprinter. I like them. I feel much more secure leaving my wallet and passport etc. in a locked hidden safe than just hiding the stuff.

I'm sure one will find its' way into my 19 quite shortly.

I use one of these. Plenty small to mount under the dinette or somewhere accessible in the trailer. I also like that its opened by feel so you can open it in the dark.

Ignoring the intended contents (it's just a box, you can just put your passport or whatever in it), this is closer to the size I was thinking of than the typical small home safe; the same supplier's smaller "microvault" sizes might be even more suitable.

With 16 gauge steel construction, I might call these "lockboxes" rather than "safes"... but that may be all that's required.

Yeah, its not designed to be a real "safe" that would stop a determined thief, but it would slow them down. In most camping areas I would think of it as unnecessary, but its nice to be able to store valuables instead of locking them in the tow or stuffing them under the seat cushions.

I've been wondering about how to put a box in that is large enough for camera gear and a laptop. I'm not interested in the weight of a safe, I just want something that would be a little difficult to open with a screwdriver or other small tool. I just want a little peace of mind when I go into a store or museum.

Not much help here, but at home, I put a box of Kleenex on top of the Apple logo on my MacBook Air when I leave the house.
As a news photographer, I often used to park in lanes in the downtown area ( commercial plates ). I'd open the trunk of the company car, which was full of camera and computer gear and take what I needed for the assignment. I guess if I owned the gear, rather than the company, I'd have been more worried, but I'm not sure what I could have done different.
Never did get burgled, not even when I was photographing a police demo on how to prevent your vehicle from getting broken into. The gist was, keep stuff out of sight. ( Actually, I did get burgled once, parked under the court house, next to the RCMP headquarters in Surrey ).

This one would store a laptop and probably the wife's iPad, our phones, camera, and still have room to spare. It would take up quite a bit of space (19x15x8 ) but should still fit under the seats somewhere.

Hey,
Found this while poking around the intertubes Best Small Gun Safe, Best Handgun Safe - Gun Safe Reviews Guy. Yes ignore the intended uses for some of the safes. My thoughts were and are for hidden and storing various items that one might not want or need to carry on their person ie medical records if your on the road for weeks or months etc.

We might install a lightweight safe to protect small items like documents, phones, and small backup drives for our laptops against crimes of opportunity, but given time and tools thieves can steal pretty well anything. We plan to buy the best theft insurance policy we can afford, and leave photos of our gear, copies of the sales slips, and all serial numbers on file with the insurance company.
