Simple interior frame to support the aluminum. Wrap .062" aluminum around and the box gains a lot of strength.

This box has gone from Alaska to Baja without incident. You don't need an armour plated box.

Very nice looking aluminum box Ron ! Actually I think it looks nice with your fiberglass trailer ! Since we both know something about fiberglassing , this is another way to accomplish the same thing with a individual touch and great looking to boot . Pat

Thanks Pat. Yup, I do know a little bit about f.g. I've built two f. g. ocean going sailboats as well as been part of building the largest commercial fishing boat built of f.g. Glad my days of buying resin by the 45 gal. drum are over.

I wouldn't in a 1000 years ever think that a one off layup of f.g. and plywood etc. in any way could be compared to the ease of making a non f.g. box.

Anyone not wanting the aluminum look could paint it to match and anyone worried about denting it could do what Myron did; use plastic sheet in place of aluminum.

Which, of course, I managed to dent with the truck bumper when I jack-knifed a backing up turn....

Really not a ding or a dent. More just matching little dingo-ritos.

Nobody said easier, heck it is easiest to just order from Escape. The easy way to get things is most often not what many of us end up doing as mods to our trailers. We do it for the aesthetics we like, we do it because we enjoy it, we do it because we can.

I have never been accused of doing things the easy way before, and likely won't into the future.

Besides, it really would not be that tough. Build a wood box to shape, and apply a layer or two of glass. The inside could be just coated with epoxy, but I would likely glass that too, maybe using glass mat. Sand and paint. Easy Peasy, lots of fun/

I would like to make my own box so that I could fit a couple of lawn chairs in it.

storage box

I like Myron's box . I think it is wood frame with an alum siding then painted ?
The 3/4 in. bottom is a good idea then it looks like 1by4's upright for structure then alum sheeting stapled or screwed to upright 1by4 with a metal top ? I wonder what the weight will be ?

The other option is making it out of daimond plate or Alum and having it made into a box at welding school ? I won't even plan anything until I get the 21 home . Although who knows when that will be with the VIN problem that ETI is having with our US Govt.

How shall I put it? Um, Myron is a master at recycling and the wall material is some plastic material obtained much cheaper than aluminum sheet.

Weight? Much less than f.g. coated plywood.

Yes, simply ordering from Escape is very easy. What's hard is pulling that seven hundred dollars out of my cold tight fist.

Right, it is plastic material, a corrugated sheet bought at a plastics supplier. Whole thing dry weighs in at about 32 pounds. But if you went to my post #60 dated 3/29/2014 in A few mods...etc etc., you got the whole picture.

Myron where did you buy the corrugated plastic from ? Do you think 1/8 ply or alum would work also ? Jim

I found a plastics supplier here in Albuquerque, carries all manner of sheet plastics etc etc. I bought a 4 x 8 sheet. Best suggestion is check your Yellow Pages, or Google it. If I was going for plywood I'd find something really thin, like 1/16th inch. Home Depot often uses this as a cover sheet protecting their expensive veneers.

Is this the stuff? Coroplast?
Coroplast 48 in. x 96 in. x 0.157 in. White Corrugated Plastic Sheet-CP4896S - The Home Depot

It bends in one direction only and if bent a fraction more, it creases.

Wow, that's it. Never knew HD sold it or in colors. Price is fair. Strong, light, cheap, flexible.

I'm surprised that this material bends smoothly over a radius as tight as that of Myron's box corners. It is intended to be used in flat sheets (usually for temporary signs) and like Glenn, I find it just kinks if bent... although I've never tried to smoothly bend it over a frame.

We just had a big cloudburst overhead and I couldn't find the umbrella but I had to run out to the trailer to double-check. So yes, it bends fairly easy if the ribbed seams are horizontal and you use contact cement to get it (slowly) on the first shot.
