Storage door locks

Hi all, I know this has been covered in other threads and that the locks are only keeping the honest people honest. But in an effort to try and slow down the thieves out there I have been looking for alternatives to the exterior storage door locks which have a limited set of keys. I found these and wondered what you guys think of them.

Thanks

Storage Door Locks

I would be concerned about road grime getting into the tumblers. In places where salt, sand, and gravels are used to mitigate winter road surfaces might be especially abusive. Just something to consider....

You might look into Tubular Cam locks...I wanted a more secure option other than the 751 key that most RV's/Trailers have and I stopped at this place in Palmdale, CA. and the owner changed out all the locks except the propane compartment on my 5.0TA. Here's a link:

I've used and recommend the 3 digit version of these. I put two on my 19 storage door.

Installed the tubular cam locks today on the baggage hatch. Thanks, Pat! I took a bit different approach and ordered two keyed alike so I could put a lock on both sides that simply opens with the same key. Reused the finger lift from the old lock. These also include a rubber gasket which didn't exist on the OEM locks.
RTCL

Easy mod and now other people's keys won't open our baggage hatch.

What a great way for keeping my funnels and water hoses safe from thieves. I know they're out there.

Had that experience going South one winter . By the time we got from Wisconsin to Florida enough dirt and road salt had entered the locks and they were almost impossible to open.
I removed them and installed a simple turn latch.
If thieves want my solar lights or my plastic funnel there welcome to take them .

Hi Greg I keep tools like my torque wench , hammer etc. no water hoses they are in the front box . If you get the Little cover that goes over the lock which is sealed ,water and dirt doesn't get in lock . Each to their own I guess . Pat

Lol, you referring to all the positive folks, Pat? Not a worry, we don't have all the road salt, moisture and grime in our area of the country.

I was at a local locksmith to get padlocks for the wheel chocks, front cargo box latches, and propane tank hold-down, all keyed the same, and asked about those cargo hatch locks. They stocked the original style locks, which can be custom keyed. About $13 CAD each. My plan is to get two done to a custom ket and put them both on the same hatch.

Question Ch751 replacement locks

I don’t understand how these locks can have different key “codes”. The key and locks just have two little notches unlike keys that have teeth. Are you sure someone else’s key from the same company can’t open your locks?

All CH751 keys & locks are interchangeable. I've opened (with the owner's permission) the storage doors on a 40' Class A. If you want to have locks your neighbor can't open, you will need to change them.

Cam locks

Jon Vermilye - I understand the need to replace the locks. I just don't see how replacing them with the Cam locks with the two little notches solves the issue. It looks like anyone with that type of key could open your locks. Keys are "coded" with individual teeth arrangements, but how are the 2 notch keys "coded" differently so one key doesn't unlock everyone's doors.

The tubular keys have a lot more than one notch going on.

See the notches on the side of the key? Each notch can be ground to a different depth, similar to how each position on a flat key can be ground to a different depth, producing a toothlike appearance.

Flat key locks can generally be drilled out fairly easily, whereas tubular locks are more resistant to this type of attack, as well as to standard lock picks. Some tubular locks, however, are highly vulnerable to attack from the lowly BIC pen. Search YouTube for how to videos.
