Table mod

Earlier this year, we were fortunate to travel on the Eurostar train from Paris to London. The tables on the trains fold up to half their size and I wondered if I could do something similar. This table is a proof on concept using the idea, it’s not perfect, but we will try it for the summer season. The table is the same size and weight as the original. As you can see in the photos, it does fold up to half the size for travel (or ¾ size). It can move in and out, be locked in place and be moved down when the bed is needed. I made my own slider with channel aluminum since I did not want to change the original table. I also had to work around where the pedestal was placed (not ideal for this table), I didn’t want to move it and make more holes in the floor. The hinges are able support the table leaves. It was a fun project.

Very Nice. I think this looks good, and is a great improvement on the front dining table.

Can you still drop the table top to form a single bed if need be.

Chris, this is a beautiful table, demonstrating your exceptional craftsmanship! Pete and I can picture you on the train, down on the floor, crawling all around, and taking pictures from every angle. Bravo on your creation! Very impressive! Can hardly wait to see this.

Thanks all.
Thanks Linda, did you get the lights working in the caboose of the train?
J Mac, yes the table can still be dropped down to form the bottom of the bed

My husband loves this mod, and was trying to find the hinges you used online. He didn't have much luck, finding them, and was wondering what they are called, or better yet, where they were purchased. Thanks

Exceptionally well made and functional. I love that you can slide and lock it, and the simplicity of the design. Well done!

If you are lucky to have a Woodcraft or Rockler woodworking store near you they should have them aswell.

Rockler - Search Results for invisible hinges

Buy Soss Invisible Hinge, 3/8" x 1" at Woodcraft.com
