Table slide repair

Our Escape 19 has been in storage since June 1, drained and power off inside an out building for sun protection. Daytime highs have been slightly over 100°F for at least 30 days. Now that things have been cooling off we are preparing for fall and winter travels.

We noticed a small Formica strip on the floor under the table. It is the wood protection strip for the table lock and the glue softened during the summer heat. We decided to install a steel strip in the same location as we have a roll of steel strapping left over from building our house. We kept the length the same as the Formica, which gave us room for 2 screws on either end. The metal is slightly wider than the Formica so we placed a double row of screws in either side to hold the metal flat. Works great and will never wear through unlike the Formica which was showing signs of wear.

Are you referring to the knob turn friction lock underneath? They used to drill a hole, but the steel strap will give you better friction.

CPAHarley, you are almost right. The formica strip is what the screw in lock attaches to under the table. Our glue gave out, otherwise we would have not done this repair. Several spots on that Formica had divots from really cranking down the lock, more than likely making sure it would not move during travel. There were long scratches on the Formica where the lock was not tight enough during travel. This metal strip should solve most of the Formica troubles.
PS just look under your table and you will see the Formica strip.

Yes, the strip is relatively new in 2ndG models, the early ones just had a hole for the threaded end, but after awhile that hole got larger with use. A washer glued around the hole would work as well as your metal strap.

We like to lock the table in other positions than top dead center. Such as recent loading of the bench seats. It is just easier if the table is locked to one side. Same with eating, Gary is larger than me so the table is not centered for meals, but is locked. The standard Formica strip is then a big improvement for the 2ndG models. We do not have the U shaped dinette, just the standard bench seats. Guess we must have easier to reach storage, just slide table back and forth.

Here is a photo of the metal strip and knob. Stops are in the original position. A metal ruler would work well also
