Tilted Stripper Pole

Ever since roof cracks over the end of the overhead sink cabinet showed up and the ETI "Stripper Pole" became standard I thought that it would be a good idea to add one since I travel bumpy roads sometimes.

Two things held me back. I just wasn't crazy about doing it the ETI way. I have 1" s/s tube and the rail bases are inexpensive but I just didn't like the look of it. The major reason that I didn't go ahead was that my wife wouldn't let me. She uses the counter extension for her dish rack and it would be in the way.

So I played with some different way of supporting the upper cabinet and came up with this design. It's strong, does the job and most importantly, my wife can use her dish drying rack. I used 3/4" s/s because I thought that it was a more suitable size.

I'll never know if I would have gotten roof cracks without it but I won't wince as much when I hit potholes.

Ron

things we never think of,...

my wife's sister was visiting us... she's a classic 'dwarf' er little person, stands about 4'2, has a relatively normal sized torso but extremely shortened upper limbs. even with our extra large extra sturdy step, she had a very hard time getting in and out of the E21, the pole was way beyond her reach, she couldn't even reach the outside handle until she was already on the step.

All the great minds on the site can come up with a fix for everything .

Ron how did you repair the holes in the counter top from the original pole?

Enjoy the journey.

For some reason I remember the early 1stG E19 did not have a pole, just the E21 did, but now the 2nd G models both do (E19 and E21)

FWIW Not an engineer and did not stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night but I have framed houses. The way I see it the force of the roof with the vertical pole is directed downward directly to the trailer frame rail through the cabinet base, the most solid structure in the trailer. The slanted pole transfers the forces to the side wall of the trailer which has no base support. The lateral force could also deflect the trailer wall causing door frame issues in the future. Just my opinion.

Some of us have added additional handles on the interior bulkhead between the door and the screen that work well for kids or shorter adults. Maybe this is a possible solution?

The majority of the force is still transferred downward into a very rigid cabinet structure. The angle is not extreme so the lateral force is very minor. It is highly unlikely there would ever be a problem. The bigger risk is roof gelcoat cracks without a pole due to some of the roads that Ron in BC drives.

That's correct. Mine's a 2014 and ETI had not yet begun installing them on 19's.

It was only after there were reported roof cracks in the area over the end of the upper cabinet that ETI started installing the support pole.

My pole is capable of supporting far more load than required. It's purpose is to act more as a vibration dampener, that is, to keep the end of the upper cabinet from bouncing up and down and creating stress cracks in the f.g. It was installed with a pre-load and I'm reasonably certain there wouldn't be any bouncing cabinet.

What do you use for your dish rack?

We use a drying mat; no rack. It absorbs water from the dishes and keeps them from sliding off the stove cover. From Bed, Bath and Beyond.
Easy to store.

We use a very similar pad also.

The one shown in post #1 She also has a smaller one. I suggested switching to using the stove area but she wasn't thrilled. Hey, she can do the dishes anyway she wants. I'm glad that she views the kitchen area as her domain and leaves the maintenance stuff to me.

Ron,
I like your design and instalation of the the striper pole. My trailer is the same year as yours, and I have been thinking of installing a pole to support the cabinet. Did you get the parts from ETI or you get them somewhereelse? Can you provide a link to obtain the parts. Thanks.
