Traveling with Guitars

Just ordered our Escape 19. Currently have a 17' Casita and travel with two guitars in the closet which doesn't leave much room for anything else. We usually have only a few hanging items and like the idea of closet shelves in the new trailer. Anyone have ideas for modifications that would include a place to keep guitar cases while living in the Escape?

I usually carried mine in the back of the tow vehicle, though only had just one. Not sure what I will do with the 5.0TA though. I do have a Martin backpacker that I have a waterproof dry bag for though, and that could stay in the back of the truck. Though that is a great guitar to take canoeing, I would MUCH rather have my Fender Balboa to play, with its better sound and action.

I never keep my acoustics in the trailer. Way too much variation in heat and humidity. I actually bought my F 150 because I could put several guitars in back of a standard cab seat.

I currently have a 17' Casita...soon moving up to 21' Escape. I have a big guitar and hard case that I strap verticallyto the headrest of the folded rear seat of my Ford F-150 Supercrew.

I travel with a Baby Martin in a hard case. It stays on the bed of our 19 during the day and goes into the truck's cab at night. I haven't found any better way to deal with it.

The problem with the rear seat in my F-150 is that our dog claims it, though he really only needs the 2/3 part, and there is certainly a ton of floor space too. I could see using space in there too.

Teach the dog to play, then you won't need Sirius.

He would probably sound better than me too.

For traveling, why not in the dinette area... On each side put guitar on seat cushion, put back rest cushion on top for protection, put straps around it attached to the wood underneath so it won't slide off

I don't like carrying unstowed items myself. Mainly because I don't like to shift things around when I go inside.

My wife plays too--thus two guitars. I usually don't like to haul them around in the SUV because of heat and concerns about theft when I am parked away from the campground. Our son had one stolen out of his trunk in SC. Kind of like the idea about the dinette area. Would having the U-shaped dinette be best for that? I could put the guitars on the back bench. Do you think I could still get a larger table and use the back bench for storage on the seat and below?

With how many people are you traveling? The u-shape is nice, but use wise not the greatest for more then 2 people. The normal configuration seats easily 4.

In reference to storing in pu truck, I totally understand your concern. 17' Casita does not leave much wiggle room. May rearrange things once we get the 21' Escape.

Can't help for the 19, but there is plenty of room on the side of the bed in the 5.0TA.

I have a mini Taylor for traveling and have found there's really no perfect solution. I got it because it is easy to carry around and I don't worry about it the way I would my Martin, which has a case that weighs a ton. It's a compromise between the full size Martin and a Martin backpacking guitar. When we travel, it's usually in the car and when we are camped it goes back and forth from the corner of the dinette seat ( we do not have the u-shaped dinette) and the car unless the weather is hot, and then it stays in the trailer. I thought originally I'd put it in the closet, but then we wouldn't have a closet. I'm sure there are people who could rig up something safe under the bed, but that is beyond our capabilities.

We use Taylor Minis for travel also, but they still require a place to be. Probably just putting them on the seats of the dinette will be what we do too, but I like the idea of strapping them in. Didn't even think of under the bed. Does the bed lift up or do you access the storage from the doors beneath it?

We stow our guitars under the bed in our 19-foot, and have plastic storage bins taking up the rest of the space to hold them in place when travelling. The mandolin case fits nicely under the dinette bench seat (passenger side).

We also are planning to screw Hercules locking guitar hangers into the bathroom outside wall for when we are parked for a longer period, just to have the instruments handy (we special ordered plywood reinforcement on that wall for that purpose). The U-shaped dinette is excellent for jamming with 2 or 3 people with the table removed.

I like the idea of hanging the guitar while camping, Carol. A guy is much more likely to play it that way too.

Funny, they can't figure out where to hang tea towels, but guitars no problem....
